When you're hungry, hunger is something even a Sesame Street target viewer can grasp. They are doing an (early - 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 9) prime-time special, about living poor. Certainly a complex issue, but one a great many children will relate to. This isn't the daytime Sesame Street where the grown-ups get some free electronic babysitting, but an episode for parents to watch with them. I can't understand why someone would have an issue with "feed the hungry" as a broader message, and good advice on smart nutrition might sink in for the parents, if Big Bird tells them so. A few years ago, they did one on military deployments, and wounded vets. Some would say the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were way too complicated for the show's audience, but I bet it was nice for the little one's who could wrap their heads all the way around, "Daddy's gone." Yeah, they're a bunch of bleeding heart liberals, but they do good work. They are cheap, too! [:D]

Sad that a children's show, aimed at 2-8 year olds has the balls to face the subject head on, but our elected officials don't. Well, par for course... good on CTW / Sesame Street.

At least some kid that lives in a shelter (or worse) will realize that he or she isnt all alone in the world and there are others just like him (or her).

Food pantries are at the bottom of the heap and this whole cut cut cut mentality has left em in the weeds One of my best friends from the the parents supporting our scout troop runs the Open Door Food Pantry on Cape Ann. He told me on the last camp out that they are now on their 3rd disappointment over bills to fund food banks because they are being tabled in committee and I'm not going to point any fingers cause I haven't seen the records myself. But he said that it's been since January... so the math is kind of simple. And I'll tell ya... I don't give a FUCK what anybody's orientation. NOBODY in this country has any business calling them selves American or for that matter getting a good night's sleep if they think it's okay for kids or families to go hungry. We could be in ten times worse condition than we are and still feed everybody. I've been volunteering two days a month there at the pantry. And I told Bill I couldn't do the counter anymore because the rations have gone down so much that when w woman with kids comes up and I can only give her only TWO frozen meats and Three refrigerated breakfast (eggs, non-milk dairy, and waffles, shit like that), I'm having a tough time looking them in the eye. they get about 15 cans of various shit most of us don't get real hot and bothered about and all the about to go bad bread you can get and a bag of vegetables. That's what a family of 4 get. Kids miss an average of 4 meals a week on that ...IF they have school lunch programs with breakfasts.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that sesame street(at least as I remember if from years ago) was always about poor kids. I mean really they live in a ghetto. I grew up poor and always thought the point of sesame street was to give kids something else to think about other than how poor they are.

Well, they've done things frequently to make kids sensitive to stuff. I trust em to handle things right and if they don't, they'll hear about it. They're kind of unofficially and officially monitored by day care and preschool teachers around the country. <fingers crossed>

They have done that for years (do you want me to insert a duh here) That wasn't my point. Try to put yourself in the place of a child that can only watch pbs because it's the channel you don't have to pay to watch. That is if the child is lucky enough to even have a t.v. Then try and imagine that child being told "oh yeah you think you have it hard watch this" The street has done a pretty good job of telling poor kids they can still learn, they can still work, they and still be liked no matter who they are or how poor they are. But IMO this is going a tad out of it's way to enlighten kids now. oh Unless that is you are hoping that many parents will be watching and somehow this will force them to run out and help those in need. Which you can cross your fingers and hope will happen, but I won't be holding my breath in the same hope.
