England out. Ireland out. [:(]

Oh, please, not Australia and New Zealand out, too.
Here's hoping for better news by morning . . .

SoulAlloy -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/8/2011 8:38:38 PM)

Wales! :-p

Tantriqu -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/8/2011 10:00:22 PM)

Happy I am for Wales, and had the pleasure of watching them wallop the beautiful Scots in Six Nations.
But I don't think they'll win their next' but good luck to Cymru.
I <3 Anzacs, just please not SA or the Argies!

Tantriqu -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/8/2011 11:49:33 PM)

Whew! Advance, Australia fair!
Go All Blacks!

Oz vs defending champs Sth Africa wasn't pretty but daaaaaamn, it had all the tension and atmosphere a big match should. Still can't believe the Boks (Sth Africa) won everywhere except on the scoreboard (final score 11-9 to Oz). Saw somewhere that the Boks had 69% possession to Oz's meagre 31% - and we still got up!!! Maybe there's something in Sth Africa being the oldest team at the WC2011 vs Oz fielding the youngest....

Just 4 teams left and semi-finals next weekend. The big one is easily game 2, featuring the world's top two ranked sides - the mighty New Zealand All Blacks (1) vs the Oz Wallabies (2). Oz haven't beaten the All Blacks at Auckland's Eden Park (the House of Pain?) for 25 years. But (I think) the All Blacks haven't won a WC semi-final for 24 years, have never beaten Oz in a WC semi and are last-start losers to the Wallabies. The Kiwi's beat Argentina well on the scoreboard in their quarter final but got battered and bruised for their trouble. As did Oz from the Boks....

Game 1 is Wales vs France. Not sure of their respective world rankings (France is either 4 or 5, depending on the commentator) and they've been awful all tournament until they bounced England out in the quarter finals. Wales have largely slipped under the radar, with some help from Oz's shock loss to Ireland in the group stage. Had Oz won that game, and thus their group, Wales would've had the daunting prospect of playing the Wallabies in the quarter finals instead of Ireland. I can hear the Sth Africans still groaning, as they would've played Ireland instead of Oz....

Such is the magnitude of the NZ vs Oz semi, whoever wins from France vs Wales has a decent chance of slipping under the the other's guard in the Final. I fancy the frogs to be that team and they are exactly the unpredictable and often disjointed side that can spring such a surprise.

Hmmmm, Wallabies coach (Robbie Deans) is a New Zealander and former All Black. Being as how NZ are hosting WC2011, you think he'll be the toast of NZ when Oz lift the Cup for the 3rd time? ;)

Focus.

Now for the next prayer: Dear All Blacks, please crush France, and look gorgeous doing it. Ta.

Focus50 -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/11/2011 3:33:03 AM)

The NZ prayer is more likely "please don't choke again; please don't choke again...."

For those who don't know, the All Blacks won the first WC in 1987 and haven't gotten past the semi final stage in the 5 World Cup tournaments since. This from a side that has consistently been the team to beat in World Rugby for much of the last hundred years.

The Wallabies have played 3 WC Finals, defeating England in 1991, defeating France in 1999 and suffering a heart-stopping 3 point loss to England in 2003. Though one would (begrudgingly) concede England were the gun team that year and thoroughly deserved their win. The other two WC's were won by the Sth African Springboks - 1995 and 2007.

The All Blacks are the best rugby team in the world. And they're playing at home in front of their fanatical fans. Yet the team kiwis in general fear losing to most is the Wallabies. We are each other's "local derby" and all sporting contests are fought hard and tough and sometimes dirty. But Rugby is the only sport where NZ usually start favourite - and that equates to nerves and pressure, most especially on the game's biggest stage (World Cup), where NZ don't have the results to match their otherwise deserved reputation.

If Oz win, I fancy it'll be a close score board. But if it's the All Black's night, we just might get a hammering. We have that unpredictability that youth brings to a side - good and bad....

Go the Wallabies...!

From all the lovely subbies who have e-mailed me, the CO msg is clear:
Several are cheering for Wales as the sole UK left, everyone else for Anzacs, but the unifying theme:
For gawd's sake, not the cheese-eating surrendermonkeys!

Just donated to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal on the rugby world cup site: it feels so good :-)

Tantriqu -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/12/2011 5:26:21 PM)

Next: who should ref the final game? I thought Craig Joubert again, but he's doing a semi-. I miss Paddy O'Brien who was a standout. Lawrence shot himself in the foot with the SA/AUS game, and Walsh just isn't competent, but they'll be local 'favourites'.
Just please, not Jonathan Kaplan!

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/12/2011 5:30:23 PM)

This sooooo sucks there is NO rugby here. What's up with the All Blacks?

Tantriqu -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/12/2011 8:31:56 PM)

Although the Kiwis are still favoured, this year there is no clear winner, especially since many teams including the All Blacks had horrifying injuries. Mils Muliaina sustained a fractured shoulder and stuck around after the game to celebrate his 100th cap: now *that's* tough/masochistic/crazy.

FYI, free access to the rugby world cup site includes full replays of games: just another reason rugby is a kajillion times better than football/soccer [donations to the Christchurch Earthquake Fund are suggested in lieu].

MadAxeman -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:07:49 AM)

The frogs were inspired against a slow to react England. They've been ordinary in the other matches. Wales have a free flowing style which is possibly the most attractive of any of the sides. The Taffies are the lowest rated, but this is tournament play and they have looked nearer their top form than the others. It's easy to pick Nz on rankings and rep, but I do see chances for all the sides left. Rare for a world event. This isn't available in America? That's piss poor work by the administrator's. They should have given the TV rights away to spread the word.

lobodomslavery -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:16:06 AM)

For me it Australia vs France in the final
kevin

MadAxeman -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:23:04 AM)

Take it to the bookies, that might be the outside bet.

lobodomslavery -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:32:21 AM)

As a man who has lost more than he has won over the years in the bookies i think ill pass, i would be more confident that Barcelona will beat Racing Santander on Saturday night, i would take that to the bookies for sure
kevin

MadAxeman -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:34:34 AM)

Yea, but you'll have to put on a bag of spuds to win a Quaver.

lobodomslavery -> RE: RWC anyone? (10/13/2011 12:43:40 AM)

It depends sometimes you can get lucky. Like for example the other night only one team in the accumulator didnt win, i would have won $9,000 for a $0.70 stake

Pardon my shamelessly quoting myself but an error needs correcting. Considering they were beaten by Sth africa in the 1995 WC final, the All Blacks have indeed made it past the semi final stage since their 1987 triumph.

Sorry 'bout that....

I don't mind the look of the Welsh.... They were certainly competitive against Sth Africa for much of their group match. I just don't think a "free flowing style" will work in such a big game, despite opponents France traditionally being a little reluctant to get grass stains on their kit with tedious defensive work. Just beware of the frogs in broken play, they do like to run the ball....

And what's this, America isn't taking the coverage? Not even of their own team? I thought one of the more entertaining group games of WC2011 was the US Eagles vs Russia. A bit of cold war rivalry on display, even....
