For me it Australia vs France in the final
kevin

Of the 4 teams contesting their respective semi finals, I think the favourites to progress are France and New Zealand. And my experience of football (Rugby Union and Rugby League) is that both favourites almost never seem to get through; always at least one upset somewhere....

So the mojo says it'll be either Wales vs NZ or France vs Oz in the final. As an Aussie, I'll obviously be cheering for the frogs in game 1; just not because I'm some sort of closet fan.... ;)

Focus.

Almost no money has been bet on the All Blacks all tournament.  A whole boatload is being wagered on the Wallabies for next week - probably the classic emotional hedge bet.

Next: who should ref the final game? I thought Craig Joubert again, but he's doing a semi-. I miss Paddy O'Brien who was a standout. Lawrence shot himself in the foot with the SA/AUS game, and Walsh just isn't competent, but they'll be local 'favourites'.
Just please, not Jonathan Kaplan!

Whoa, you really are a fan! Until I read your post, I had Buckley's of naming even one ref.

I'll settle for any referee who doesn't think the world has tuned in to watch him blow the pee out of his whistle.... Let the game flow and let the players decide the result - PLEASE!!!!

Focus.

I'm English, so will get heaped on by Welsh and Aussie mates if they win.
The French have been natural enemies for the last half millenia.
This leaves the Blacks to support by default. Who can play open, but as you suggest are also comfortable sitting in defence while the opposition die on their shields.
The 2 semis are interesting in the clash of styles. The southern hemisphere one will be interesting to see what tactics are employed by each side, they have the personnel to alter their styles.
The northern one will see 2 sides much happier to attack.
Possession will be won and lost constantly.
The final will then of course provide a classic contrast again.
The US is missing out on the best sport going on at the moment.
It would have made a great introduction to the game for armchair fans.

I should add, England are already getting heaped on, by the Scots, Welsh, Irish, Aussies and our own ex players.
It's cool that we can unite so many nations.
The French believe us to be beneath commenting on.

I absolutely agree! That's one of the most frustrating things about the last footie WC, the fucking refs were complete idiots who gave yellow/red cards every time someone blinked. Completely ruined the flow of the matches.

I think the defining game for the All Black's WC choker's tag was that 1999 semi final vs France, when they went in at half time with about a 20 point lead over the frogs. As they say in footy parlance; didn't show up for the second half - and France ran riot.... Probably didn't help that the dreaded Oz then cruised by France in the final.

Since then, an unforgiving NZ public has cynically labelled any WC loss as "choking". Far be it for me to tell them that sometimes, you just get beaten by a better side on the day. No, better for all if kiwis themselves continue to nurture and reinforce their own team's self-doubts. A perpetual and not so subtle whispering campaign....

Focus.

Crap! Warburton off for red when it should have been a yellow.
DOOOOOOOOOOM!
Sigh, Rolland has sided with the cheese-eating surrender-monkeys of his fatherland.
Please, Gods of Rugby, not France!

Worst decision of the cup so far.

To be fair, it started with the tackle, not the ref. The tackle was a shocker and the skipper of all people should know better not to lift and drive.

I didn't see much wrong with that tackle, neither did the SA and Oz commentators in the studio.
The guy's legs whipped up and he had the resistance of a child's balloon.
Yellow would have been harsh.
France don't look good enough to beat either team in the other semi.

No, no, no! Lifting tackles immediately draw the attention of referees and rightly so. And that particular tackle had every element of why it was outlawed. The player was lifted, rotated beyond the horizontal and dumped on his head - immediate penalty for starters....

The only real conjecture was whether it deserved a straight red card - but certainly a yellow. But it starts with the tackle.... When your own actions force the referee to react, don't be surprised of the the potential for over-reaction (*IF* that's what he did).

While the send-off may have ruined the game as a contest, Wales had numerous chances they simply didn't take. I think it was one goal from 6 attempts and they didn't have the nerve to win on the big stage. They were all over France when Wales scored their try but that farcical attempt at field goal a few minutes later when the frogs were on their knees defensively was the stuff of a team not used to winning big games. Wales just didn't back themselves and France recovered and closed it out with considerable composure.

France don't look good enough to beat either team in the other semi.

Yeah, the script says the winner will come from the tournament's heavyweight clash, tonight. France are probably the game's most dangerous attacking side because of their unpredictability and willingness to run the ball, esp the counter-attack. But they struggle against teams who have a well-drilled defense that enables them to absorb such pressure. And when such teams (NZ, Oz and Sth Africa esp) have attacking flair of their own AND the willingness to use it (listening, Wales?), the tackle-shy "surrender-monkeys" (lol) tend to drop their bundle somewhat.

But France are already in the final; they have previous WC final experience and anything can happen on the night. And it's not like they've never beaten Oz or NZ before. You gotta be in it to win it and only the frogs are currently half way home.... Even though they've previously beaten NZ in WC elimination matches (1999 semi final), I suspect they'd rather play the younger and less experienced Oz. I think they'll mostly just want the Wallabies and All Blacks to smash each other and add to their injury lists....

Focus.

Like I said, it should have been a yellow: Warburton stopped as soon as he realised he had lifted his opponent off his feet and did not complete the motion into the red card/life ban 'Polynesian Piledriver' we've all seen.

5 hours to kick-off: go Anzacs: may the best and cutest team win!
I'm sure Joubert will do well.

Hmmm, stupid mojo sucks as much as the Wallabies' first 20 minutes.... lol

Vintage All Blacks; waaaaay too much pressure and precision. And much like Oz's loss to Ireland, I'm scratching my head at the "tactic" of constantly kicking the ball back early to a rampaging opposition when you've been starved for possession. Didn't score a try against the irish and didn't again, tonight.... Talk to me, Robbie...!

All Blacks vs Le Blur (my French is really sad) - talk about a non-event for an Aussie.... But in the true tradition of a fair-weather sailor, I'll back the Blacks.

Focus.

The Blacks won't be beaten by the French.
I don't see this great attacking force they're supposed to be.
They blitzed England for 20 minutes then took about 51% of the rest of the game.
The last word I can be bothered to utter about that tackle is, the ref should have gone upstairs.
At least there would have been some perspective and at worst shared blame. It was a mistake.
The tackler let him go once he was perpendicular and didn't spear him. All the neutral experts in the studio thought it was a terrible decision.
Australia were lucky to make it look as close as they did today.
They were fortunate to come only second.
I'll enjoy watching the Frogs get squished.

Whew! The best team won.

Here's another charity: if you remember the awe-inspiring 8-month fear-the-beard of Canadian flanker Adam Kleeberger, he's shaving it off for two charities: the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund and Prostate Cancer. For Canadians, Rick Mercer is going to do it!

Please give!

A grinder of a game with Oz vs. Wales: poor Warburton.
But nice to see everyone cheering for Wales' last try: classy.

And Joubert in the finals! Good for him; didn't anticipate that since he reffed a semi-.
Go All-Blacks!
