the importance of a collar? in reality, sweet fuck all. in the minds of the people involved, whatever the fuck they want it to be. it means nothing really, its just a fucking symbol that some people use to mean all sorts of shit.

I'm with Hannah on this one. 100%.

I'll go even further and say that "the collar" is one amongst several things that indicate that both the 'collarer' and the 'collaree' are still looking at their index cards to see what they are supposed to do next. If they are doing this at step one or step three, it's not difficult to imagine that they are still going by the rule book at step 53 or 187. Oh! the spontaneity!

Or you could have someone who knows-what-they-are-doing/ knows-what-they-want and dispense with it. Or someone with imagination. Or someone who has no clue, still searching, and could well do without such bizarre extraneous distraction in their pursuit of the unknown, as they feel compelled. Or a host of other things more conducive to real life emotions and concerns.

Depends on the folks involved.

For me, it is more sacred than a wedding ring, if offered in a M/s relationship. It represents a love so total, a desire so deep than only taking possesion of or being taken possesion of is enough to express the depths of emotion there.

Has to agree with the Chickie Poo on this one.  To some, it may mean nothing, but to others it means the world.  I'm one of the "means the world".
