Lucylastic -> Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/9/2011 6:29:48 PM)

The centerpiece of former pizza czar Herman Cain’s presidential campaign is his “999″ plan, which would slash taxes on the wealthy, drive up deficits to the worst point since World War II, and force low-income Americans to pay a massive nine times their current tax rate. In an interview this morning with CNN’s Candy Crowley, Cain even said food and clothing would not be exempt from the 9 percent national sales tax he would put in place if elected president. Indeed, he said it would be “fair” for a poor person to pay as much in sales taxes as Crowley does:
CROWLEY: Is there any exception, as you see it, in this consumption tax? Except for clothing, perhaps? Except for food? [...]
CAIN: Nope, you don’t have to do that. Nope, you don’t have to do that. [...]
CROWLEY: So a poor person is paying the same amount of taxes on groceries as I am? Does that sound fair to you, just in a vacuum?
CAIN: Yes, it does sound fair because of the other point I’m about to make. If they need to buy a car or a home or some hard goods that are used, they pay no taxes.
Watch it:

Because he says his plan would lower the income tax for some Americans — and, by his calculations, leave people with more money to spend — Cain seems to think his plan would leave low-income Americans with more money. He is wrong. Presently, the bottom quintile of earners pays about 2 percent of their income in federal taxes. Under Cain’s plan, their taxes would increase all the way up to 18 percent.
Taxing poor people’s food is considered so beyond the pale that even the Tea Party group FreedomWorks assumed that the final version of Cain’s tax plan would exempt food from the sales tax. Only two states, Mississippi and Alabama, charge sales tax on food.
This week, Cain said his plan would not be regressive because “It expands the base so that everybody has a lower rate. And it is not regressive on the poor.”
Clearly, he is ignoring how his tax plan would actually affect hardworking Americans, especially when it comes to the food they buy so that they can feed their families.

Well technically,he`s correct......[8|]

But what a dope.....[:D]

Added:

There`s actually a new stealth drive to tax poor people more,by republicans.

The code words used by cons, is "broaden the tax base".

Which means make more poor people pay more taxes.

Tax debate in the US often fails do discuss the other side: what is the extra tax revenue used to? As the US government is corrupt to the bone and, it seems, there is no cure on sight, I would recommend only targeted tax increases. For example, have referendums for extra tax bombing other countries, debt reduction tax, helping the poor etc....

You failed to source your, uhm... "news article", and it contains at least one glaring lie - the bottom quin-tiles of taxpayers get money BACK from the federal tax system presently.

quote:

Because the earned income tax credit (EITC) is refundable and the child tax credit (CTC) is partly so, the average effective individual income tax rate for the bottom two income quin-tiles in 2011 was negative; that is, the tax credits more than offset positive income tax liabil-ity, so that the average household in these quintiles received a net payment from the gov-ernment.

And if its cruel to tax peoples food why is it heavenly for leftists to drive energy costs through the roof in the name of their global warming cult, which in turn dramatically drives up the price of food and everything else due to increased fertilizer costs and increased costs of operating farm equipment and increased transportation costs, etc etc etc

Increased energy costs and government regulation also discourage corporations from bringing jobs here, further hurting the poor

Can`t answer the tax question, can you......

You cons love taxes....and taxing.....and giving trillions of our tax dollars away, subsidizing businesses.

StrangerThan -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 5:45:46 AM)

I guess I'll have to call bullshit on your sales tax on food quote. I'm sitting here staring at a receipt showing tax on groceries, and unless they just stopped charging sales tax on food, you can hop over to the state next door and watch them charge you too.

Unless I'm just missing a point in the "Only two states, Mississippi and Alabama, charge sales tax on food" line. Actually, I have two receipts here, one for prepared food, one for raw and I'm in neither of the states above.

So...

Sanity -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 5:56:29 AM)

We pay six percent sales tax on food, in Idaho. Yes, Lucy needs to find better sources of information.

Sanity -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 5:58:47 AM)

If the article is known to contain lies why bother to take any of it seriously

Thats ridiculous, its a BS article

So...

This is the whole point of his 999 plan... sheesh christ almighty do you not read?
9% sales tax and 9 % income tax
on poor people
who NOW get money back
but WILL UNDER HIS PROPOSED 999 Tax
pay in fact 18 % more than they do now
is that clearer?

Yes, I can read. I understand what you're saying but the supporting information is incorrect. I don't know where you got it. It's wrong.

People have been preaching a flat tax type of system for a long time. Maybe it will eventually take hold, I don't know. I do know that any tax system will account for those at the very bottom. Shrug. You and I both know that and proposed change would end up looking nothing like the original proposal.

The bigger question to me isn't fear-mongering with numbers that would never see the light of day in practice, but whether the idea has merit or not. I don't know that it does. I do know however, that part of your quote above is extremely inaccurate.

Dress him however you wish, Cain is a Corpratist and his previous stint at the FED does not bode well. It's astounding the malarkey the right is seemingly buying into concerning this man.

And Cain's 999 can easily become 101010.

Sanity -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 6:39:49 AM)

A corporatist who has provided JOBS to people

Is that a dirty word, jobs?

They are already questioning the facts of his 999 plan, being unable to support the budgets for defence, medicare and social security, let alone anything else.

ArizonaBossMan -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 6:53:39 AM)

I love Herman for many reasons. Don't think he has a chance in hell of being the nominee. Anytime you put a specific plan out there people will pick it apart. We have a huge tax inequity in this country. Far too many people have their lips around the tit of producers here. TOO MANY PEOPLE DON'T PAY TAXES. I'm not talking about the o'bama/left crap about millionaires. I'm talking about the bottom 50 percent paying little to NOTHING. I'd make the system so everybody pays SOMETHING and do away with this so called "progressive" tax system which penalizes making more money and working harder. We don't need to penalize producers; we need to encourage them. Now I realize what I"m saying is waaaay above most if not all of you reading this. But, you will have to deal with it because the tidal wave is coming november 2012.

What I'd love is a flat, universal tax. Fair, predictable, easy to pay and easy to fill out the forms. Businesses can predict their taxes, have more money to invest or do whatever the hell they want with it. People would have more money in their wallets. PEOPLE, not government, knows how to best spend what they earn.

I'd also love to repeal the amendment authorizing an income tax. Hey, they repealed prohibition in the day. I'd also like to see a term limits amendment. Yeah, we can throw the bums out, but now the system is rigged so incumbents immediately work on re election.

Every place he has been at has had a net jobloss under his managment.

No, jobs isn't a dirty word, he doesn't provide them, in fact he gets rid of them, so maybe it a dirty word to Cain.

So I'm supposed to feel sorry for agribusiness now? After they engineered all those foreclosures in the Eighties so they could bulldoze the house that got in the way of their equipment" That agribusiness? The ones that have to import fertilizer because their industrial farming monoculture methods deplete the soil ten times faster, while the nitrate runoff kills the fishing industry? That agribusiness?

I have no more tears to weep there buddy, so you can take your hand off the hole where you used to have a heart - it just doesn't have the same effect anyway, what with you there on your knees making wet sucking noises and all.

xssve -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 7:52:28 AM)

Oh right, Cain, well, yes, Adam Smith did prescribe regressive taxation as the fastest and surest way to assure economic collapse, and I know that isn't happening fast enough for the right.

Again, ideological asswipe with no basis in fact, and flies in the face of fact, per usual, have you seen gas prices? It puts the lie to your rantings.

xssve -> RE: Herman Cain: Tax Poor People’s Food will finance Tax Break For The Rich (10/10/2011 7:57:54 AM)

The really appalling thing about that whole agribusiness scam, is that the pubs turn around and  pass the biggest ag subsidy in history, after foreclosing on all the farmers whom they drove out of business with tight monetary policy, and have the nerve to stand there and call say it's for those same people - those people are long gone, living in a trailer park somewhere, while their kids turn tricks for rocks.
