DarkSteven -> Republicans clear brush. (10/10/2011 5:28:01 AM)

Both Reagan and Bush Jr.had photo ops of themselves clearing brush from their ranches.  A clean, Western, rugged image.

Why don't the Dems do that?  AFAIK, none of the Dems even have ranches.  Dukakis tried to look manly in a tank, and basically got laughed at.  Obama, Kerry, and Gore have not attempted to give themselves a macho image.

1. Any reason why the GOP candidates think the brush-clearing pics are such a good idea, and the Dems don't?
2. If you saw a pic of Obama clearing brush, what would you think?
3. How about any of the current crop of GOP hopefuls?

Disclaimer - this topic hit me when I was chainsawing up brush in my backyard and thinking what a manly activity that was.  It segued logically from there.

*snort* Sorry, Steven... this just made me think of what an entertaining place your mind is ;) all I can think of when operating power tools is "pay attention pay attention move your damned hand pay attention..."

Sanity -> RE: Republicans clear brush. (10/10/2011 5:38:11 AM)

Are those photo ops? Or do many Conservatives really have land (yes) and do we really clear brush (again, yes).

I dont have a ranch but I have spent several weekends clearing away overgrowth throughout the summer

Somewhere in here there is a joke involving the words manly, brush and bush... but I can't quite locate it.

Seriously, Teddy Rooselvelt was probably the first President to promote a manly image of himself as an outdoorsman... an image that was largely a fabrication. The famous photos of him in his deerskin outfit, holding a rifle were taken in a New York photo studio and he had a standing rule that he was never to be photographed while wearing his tennis outfit because he deemed it too effeminate looking.

Advances in technology are, I think, making it harder for politicians (and celebraties) to maintain false images of themselves... but they do keep trying.

Those Bush photos were a PR stunt, he didn't know the difference between a cow and Bull according to his neighbor, one of the working ranchers nearby was hired to take care of his token herd.

Look what happened when they tried to make Cheney into a Duck hunter...

Well, it is fitting pictorially, since neither one could see the forest for the trees.

The ones who believe that raygun and bush were anything except "dime store cowboys" should try being more observant. The presented rugged image is complete with brand new wells lamont gloves a brand new chain saw with factory paint on the muffler and with no chain.
For some image is everything.

The joke was that liberal women are more manly than conservative men. Remember the topic was conservative presidents trying to portray a manly image.

That was from PR weekly, an industry mag.

Now wait a minute, you talking Limbaugh? (today is the anniversary of his rehab announcement) or W, cuz I wouldn't give W that much credit.

Yeah, he needs the cattle on it for his tax writeoffs, otherwise its a hobby farm and gets taxed like lakefront.
