No, it needs to be recognised as a religion by somebody else besides one solipsist. Sorry.
Confuscianism is a philosophy, not a religion. The greatest sage would probably have been quite offended at the suggestion that his musings are a rival religious system in competition with Taoism.

You also might want to look at the history of Jehovah's Witnesses, a classic case of a "Christian country" going to great lengths to bust the balls of an unpopular sect.

Why is that? Why is it that the human race has prayed to thousands of different deities and that the results have consistently been the same as if those deities didn't exist? Noticing that there's a simple consistent pattern here doesn't make us religious.

Why is it some people imagine themselves gifted with supernatural abilities that allow them to issue pronouncements about whether or not prayer has made a difference in the lives of others?

That doesnt take supernatural abilities. Absence of evidence can be evidence of absence, as shown in the other thread. Hows that NDE research goin?

No need of supernatural abilities for that one.

Oh for fuck's sake, an absence of evidence is an absence of evidence. Period, full stop.

The absence of evidence that protons were actually composed of smaller particles called quarks was never evidence that they weren't. Too, there was an absence of evidence that powered heavier-than-air flight was possible, and some very fine minds considered there to be incontrovertible evidence that it wasn't.

Are you angling for the Kelvin Prize?

I answered to that one already.
You follow your rules, I follow mine. Why do YOU not hide me, if you are displeased by my messages? Would be the logic step to do.

There is no such pattern as you discern, the pattern is the opposite. If there were no Gods then no prayers would  be answered, no? I fear that you have fallen afoul of a grave misconception of what is achieved by prayer and the power of the Gods. This is far too common in this age, it is the cause of much sorrow. Yet another evil to lay before the Nameless.

Be at peace

Because you've already hid all the other cool kids, and Kirata's feeling left out.

Not according to a number of studies on the power of prayer.

quote:

ORIGINAL: AneNoz
If there were no Gods then no prayers would  be answered, no?

No, that's false. Here let me give you an example: "I pray to you OH GREAT FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER when I release this rock from my hand cast it onto the ground!" Holy rigatoni when I took my hand off of the rock it flew from the air where I had left it straight down to the ground. PROOF!!! PROOF!!! that FSM is the one true god!

Or is it? Our ancestors lived in a world where the supernatural was everywhere, everything, even your very thoughts were the product of some being or another. Then we figured out a fairly reliable method for sifting superstition out of reality and suddenly the supernatural is nowhere to be seen. It's so not there that even though James Randi is offering one million dollars to anyone who can find the tiniest scrap of it, no one is able to collect.

Might it be instead that these anecdotal stories of miracles which consistently don't pan out are actually caused by an ignorance of probabilities and natural causes or by people just making things up?

quote:

ORIGINAL: AneNoz

Well my understanding is that they are either impotent, non existent or don't give a shit about prayers.

Not common enough by my way of thinking, but don't worry we are doing our best to fix that.

It seems to me illogical of you to assume without evidence that your post "displeased" me -- unless, of course, you believe yourself capable of reading my mind. Additionally, it seems to me illogical of you to assume that you know better than me what response would "logical" for me in that case -- unless, of course, you believe yourself capable of knowing my mind better than I do.

But I suppose if you've always believed you have these abilities, that would explain why they don't seem "supernatural" to you. [:D]

A wrong supposition there.

I see by experience that you love to discuss by the sake of discussion, about any petty point, and almost always wanting to have the last word. I find this very childish, but... I let you say the last word, and move on. If you want to hide me, hide me. If you ask me again to hide you, you know my rules so you know how to provoke it. Have a nice day.
