http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/14/herman-cain-999-plan-simcity_n_1011933.html

In a video aired Friday night on "The Rachel Maddow Show," a reporter asked Cain whether he had spent some time in the world of arcologies and flying lizards. "You said you had original ideas, successful people around you thinking ideas up," the reporter said while questioning Cain about the "999" plan. "Is it an original idea or modeled after a game?"

"It's an original idea, and for people to say it's modeled after a game -- it's a lie," Cain said during a campaign stop in Tennessee. "That's all I'm going to say. It is a lie. You see, that's the difference when you become one or two in the polls. People make up stuff. That is a lie. I'm not going to take it back and not going to politically say -- but unfortunately that is not totally true. It's a lie."

The man doth protest to much....

A simple no would have sufficed.

Geez.... It obviously came from SimCity. It tops the list for one of the most ridiculous ideas ever. Not even a right-wing "economist" would back it.

Cain has no clue on how to reform the tax code, or anything else for that matter. (Godfather CEO, or not)

The problem was him saying his adviser`s names, who helped him with the idea, would remain secret.

So people started googling 999 and got hits on the vid game.

The next problem was his over reaction and calling everyone liars.lol Holy shit....

That,is someone you don`t want in charge.

The funny thing is... I like him. He is the most likable clueless Republican I have ever seen.

He's miles ahead of Palin or Bachmann in the intelligence area.

I fail to see how Cain's scheme differs from what goes on in New Zealand or many other Commonwealth countries that have a VAT.

Near as I can tell he wants a 9% VAT along with a standard 9 percent income tax for all persons, including the "corporate" ones. Same as Jerry Brown's idea of a national sales tax.

There are people doing the math on just how much revenue this would bring into the US coffers and who it would affect and in what ways. But a 9 percent VAT woudl bring in a load of money, and cut down on those offshore corporations who form a US subsidery and run it at a slight loss just so they can sell their products, and doge the tax on them. (think Sony America or Honda America.)

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/10/12/341955/cain-economist-tax-plan/

"...one of Cain’s own economic advisers said it wasn’t a tax plan he would back. While Gary Robbins, who scored the plan for Cain’s campaign and is a paid consultant, praised the plan, he made it clear that it wouldn’t be the plan he picked, Politico reports:

While Robbins praised the idea of 9-9-9, he took steps during an interview to distance himself from its author.

“It’s not a plan that I concocted,” Robbins said. “There’s nothing wrong with the plan, it just wouldn’t be the one I picked.”

Cain has dismissed criticism of his plan as “egregious” and misinformed, but it is telling that a member of his own campaign wouldn’t necessarily back the plan, which was drafted by a Koch-affiliated financial adviser at Wells Fargo, not an actual economist. And though Cain dismissed fellow presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s criticism that the 999 plan would never pass, Robbins agrees with that assessment, telling Politico that the American people would never accept such drastic changes.

Unfortunately, in addition to Robbins’ caveats, there are major problems with Cain’s plan. As Linden noted, it would cut revenue in half and create the largest federal deficits since World War II. It would also raise taxes on the poor to nine times their current rate, and since its 9 percent sales tax also hits food — something only two states currently do at a full sales tax rate — it would hit the poor even harder than already expected."
