"The Republicans' so-called plan for jobs creators, while it might have some good ideas in it, free trade agreements, passage of NAFTA reform and some other issues, those same outside analysts are saying will have no significant impact on the economy or jobs in the near term."

First of all, the author of the article is an idiot. How can free trade agreements that lead to job growth overseas be classified as a good idea when we need job growth here in the US? Republicans, hasn't offshoring caused too much job loss in the US already? How can you propose more of it?

NAFTA and free trade agreements increase employment in the US. If you dont understand why you have no business posting about them.

Are you saying all those IT workers and auto manufacturers lied about losing their jobs because of offshoring? How do you explain the low unemployment rate before free trade deals and the high unemployment rate with them?

Wilburforce, then where are all the factories that used to be in New England in the 1980's just before Nafta? There were hundreds of them employing tens of thousands of people!! Now some of them have been turned into "luxury lofts" but most of them are decaying and the old style clay bricks are being taken to build fire places and brick walls in people's private residences.
Where are all the working people making $40-$60 an hour in manufacturing jobs and buying new houses, new cars, furniture, appliances etc?
Why is unemployment north of 9 % instead of 4%?
Why is my nephew who graduated U.N.H. unable to find a good paying job? So far all he's done is unpaid internships and volunteer jobs and yes, he's still living with his parents.
Where are all those "millions of high-paying manufacturing jobs" that Clinton promised if we passed "NAFTA?"
Are they not advertising them in the Newspapers?

Free trade increases minimal wage employment at corporate owned box stores, if you live in the nominally English speaking parts of North America.

Only the corporate class and their tools would see this as any sort of  improvement.

Studies? by whom? The game developers of SimCity? It is VERY simple why free trade agreements are huge net job killers. Anyone with a basic understanding of trade can understand.


Here is the 20000 ft explanation of why:
Increased Exports - (More of other countries buying US goods) SHOULD (but not always) create more jobs
Increased Imports - (More US consumer buying of other countries' goods) usually kills US jobs (but increases them overseas)

NAFTA (for example) has increased exports to our NAFTA partners about 40%. (And that has had only a very minor positive impact at all, due to the types of goods we have been exporting to Mexico for example.
It has increased imports around 180%.

Increase in imports nearly quintupling the increase in exports = significant US job loss.


This is not rocket science. Everyone knows this.

We simply have a higher standard of living here. ANY free trade agreement, will do nothing, other than lower that standard of living to the partners we are trading with. (less jobs and lower wages)


Geez. I see enough of this "Playskool" economics when I watch the GOP debates. Now I have to explain trade 101 here.
