ORIGINAL: SternSkipper I wonder if those folks have an option to stay active duty. Reservists and Guard don't. They are considered "active" for the term of their deployment. When they go back to their prior status, they are still "in" but they go to the 'weekend a month' bit. Where a prior poster got the idea that those forces are what make up the "majority" of the forces in Iraq, I have no idea, but that's far from true. Army, Air Force, etc are in service until their contract is up. Doesn't matter if they are deployed or stateside. How many of those will stay in (re-up) once their current contracts are finished is anyone's guess. The "projected need" probably won't be as high, but considering that the military is over stretched as it is (read - revolving door deployments) I wouldn't think there will be a huge reduction in forces. More like recruitment goals will go down and fewer slots going to Guard and Reserves that actually get deployed. It is great that we're getting out of Iraq. Since we're still in Afghanistan, there will still be deployments. It will be a different destination and it won't be as frequent if they retain enough. That's going to be a huge relief.
