And what does it do with spelled? (if I've spelt it correctly?)

It says 'spelled' is fine. However, when I entered your "fourtuitous" of earlier, it instantly opened a web page that told me I should either write English properly or get on the Mayflower and sod off to America.

There were only three of us, fortuitously, but I was engaging in some puffery.

I have been found out.

May I recommend WordWeb to everybody? It's a dictionary/thesaurus that sits in your systems tray. You've only to double-click a word you're not sure of, and it'll come with 'not found' if it's not spelt correctly, and give suggestions. If it *is* spelt correctly, it'll give a definition as well as synonyms. Dead handy. Freebie version here.

Awesome. Done. Thanks, Peon.

My brother did history at uni - they'd have heated debates about 'an historical' versus 'a historical'. I'd go with the latter as a matter of taste and an unwillingness to sound (even more) pompous.
That doesn't scan at all for me.  And in this case, I simply choose the a/an distinction automatically and unconsciously based upon the strength of the vowel sound immediately following it.

So, for me it would be "an historical oddity" because the h is subdued - almost silent.  However I could in the same breath refer to "a history lesson" because the h - at least in my pronunciation - is significantly harder.   If I suddenly went off the rails and started talking in a crap cockney accent from Dicken's era I'd revise it again - "Some geezer tryin' to give me an eeestory lesson".

This reflects the entire purpose of the a/an distinction - which is not to provide a platform for pedants - but simply to allow a smooth flow between two vowel sounds without requiring a glottal stop.  Thus, the decision on whether to do so is a phonetic one, not a lexical one and is thus going to be highly variable and based upon your accent.

I didn't install WordWeb in order to help me impress people here, TG. I got it in order to help me impress publishers who might pay me.

Eh? You'd pronounce the 'h' in 'history' harder than you'd pronounce the 'h' in 'historical'? Why?

MDA and FWM,

You are both most welcome. Take no notice of these others - their minds and cultures have been sadly eroded by centuries of savagery fighting Indians and grizzly bears and they now know no better. I'm always glad to help any North American move beyond his or her primitive milieu and towards membership of the civilised world community.

OK, grizzly bears, then. I know that you colonials have a rich variety of challenges in your struggle to survive out there.
