I love when there are misspellings on spelling threads.

*snort*

ETA: I type like I talk (although.. I do talk without the incorrect spelling that sometimes happens)

so if I drop an apostrophe, it's because when I am talking, nobody is going to notice... LOL

and so on...

I figure that those who know me get that when I say "so, how ya doin" in type, thats pretty much what it sounds like when spoken

I dunno, better check with the Brits around here. They have a different flavour and colour to things like this. Like putting mayonaise on potatoes. I have actually tried that BTW..........

Speaking of BTW, what is that picture, some sort of IUD or something ?

T^T

just from another ESL point of view: in some way it is a shame to see the worthlessness of what was endlessly taught to us at school about English spelling when one sees "spelling anarchy" here and elsewhere - in another way it feels relaxing to be hopefully understood with a little less effort than expected back in my schooldays ...
I confess being a lazy typer (or should it be typist?) when it comes to some apostrophes: I usually dont care about the proper apostrophe in don't. I 'd agree it makes quite some difference when it comes it "its" and "it's" ... and wonder why nobody seems to be teaching permanently writing "it is'" in the first place.

As to punctuation: having a first language where punctuation is a minefield (and the last "simplification" of rules messed it all up even more ...) I probably make hundreds of English punctuation mistakes without even knowing ... sorry. My personal rule of thumb is NOT to set commata where I should set them in German (with some very few exceptions).
And I guess many ESL users/speakers have some similar personal rules. We/Us (which is the correct one here? I guess "we," except when talking to some of my friends in the UK and Eire ...) ESLs probably all have some flaws of our first languages slipping into "our" English nonetheless, and thus phenomena like Maltese English, Indian English, and from my knowledge also Japanese English asf are growing. Not to mention German English: we invent English words for some things (there are no German words for these ...) like "handy" (=mobile phone) or "oldtimer" (=vintage car) to be used in everyday German ... forgive me this hopefully amusing sideslip - and in case is should have been side slip - just another "Germanism."

Finally about the missing "u" in color asf ... personally I think it is simply more beautiful with than without ... and to my beloved friends on the Isles: please please please dont drop all the "h"es they are so elpful for reading a uge eap of words, or ow shall you do without them once the abit is forgotten ...

MadAxeman -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/19/2011 7:07:18 AM)

Er...thank you?

It's nice down here.

The biggest annoyance I have come across recently is a business acquaintance who loves to turn random words into proper nouns. As in : Leaving the Gate open is a Courtesy Convenience to my Neighbors and their Guests.

It is bizarre, especially since this acquaintance is constantly reminding people he went to Harvard.

Misuse of possessives is also a peeve of mine.

I am surprised at the people who are taking this thread so personally. Obviously you have the right to communicate the way you wish, others have the right to notice your mistakes. Get over it.

it is, isnt it? granted, my decorating tastes arent to the liking of many.. but if you like it, it's all good :)

ETA: "that posh" meaning that you dont disparage others for how they speak...

gawd.. it's naptime.. I am probably not making sense..

MadAxeman -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/19/2011 7:45:40 AM)

I might snipe at those who have English as their first language (especially the British) for poor execution, but not foreigners who are making an effort to meet me more than halfway.
The worst abusers of the language here, are da yoof.

I hate people that can’t figure the length of a crs2-spread at .3 gal/per/sq/yd or the PI and points of a parabolic cure given percents of fall along with PT and PC. Or the tonnage for compressed state “c” mix asphaltic concrete given depth and sq ft.

We all go through life gaining skills… some we learn better than others. I’ll forgive your ignorance if you forgive mine.
