Edwynn -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 5:14:40 PM)

Thanks for bringing to our attention yet again the inadequacy of your comprehension skills.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 5:26:56 PM)

You're welcome, I was going to object, but when speaking about inadequate comprehension skills, you certainly are more than qualified.

Edwynn -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 6:19:26 PM)

I never stated that use of the aforementioned words in that manner was actually 'wrong' or incorrect, just that such usage indicated less than stellar use or understanding of the language.

Which by your response is obvious that you failed to comprehend. If you prefer news speak to be the standard of the language, you are welcome to it.

PS

Do you always shit in the punch bowl when you are at a party, like you do here constantly?

PeonForHer -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 6:27:46 PM)

FR

My WordWeb has it that 'staunch' is used in the UK and other English-speaking countries, while 'stanch' is used in North America alone. That'd explain why I'd never heard the word 'stanch' till now.

I hope that hinders . . . .

barelynangel -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 6:36:51 PM)

I always laugh when i post because i can guarantee you i will have spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes etc within them.  Amazing i spend my days writing briefs, motions and such for courts and clients lol.  To me, as long as someone can read what i am saying on here and get a general understanding lol its all good.

I admit, i wouldn't probably be as good at my job if it weren't for spell check and grammar check lol.

One thing i ALWAYS get wrong even though i know the damn explanation is affect and effect -- i mean only a sadist could come up with those words for people to use.

So the way i see it, people can be the spelling police all they want but in the end, i am a career criminal in this and will never learn so they should focus more on the really bad guys lol.

Those are two different words to me... you "stanch" a wound, you are a "staunch" and loyal follower. Verb/adjective.

English. Such an adventurous language!

Far be it from me to try to stanch the flow of newspaper reporters and 'news anchors' using the term "staunch the flow of" instead the proper word. I will always be a stanch supporter of their using the word "staunch" however they damn well please.

My personal linguistic peeve is people who make up stuff and complain when people don't follow these imaginary rules. Things along the lines of insisting that a flow of blood cannot staunched when it can ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/staunch), or that impact isn't a verb ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/impact ).

MWebster isn't the be all and end all.  We have lots of words that don't go anywhere apart from being Scots , or Irish or even Yorkshire. A teeny island with dialects and idioms aplenty.

Do we all want to adopt essex speech? Well, it's popular but really ugly and tiring to listen to. Well it IS.

Speaking *well* is SO under-rated.............You don't need to be a *hooray* to speak well.

My grandaughter told me that she doesn't sound her t's or h's because it's part of her dialect.........She's being taught that it's all *ok*. Well, yes, but as she lives less than half a mile away from me, that's balls.(bollocks)

So we tried it out. I wrote down in words how her street-name would appear on the road sign, the way SHE ennunciated it.

It hit home. She saw it starkly. It was really idiotic.

Her teachers have her every day. Bloody hell, if I can make sense to her in an afternoon, during a cycling trip with a picnic thrown in, what have her teachers been doing for the last 4 yrs???  :)

Hope the old *staunch* thing works out this week as I have to be sticking needles into my daughter for the first time ever. You don't want a bleeder to bleed , even if they can't help it.....lol

'Staunch' is used both ways in correct, er, I mean UK English.

Which reminds me: every now and then I scan the net for use of the word 'hompfyflompf'. But it hasn't caught on. Shame. On the other hand, I still haven't worked out a meaning for it.

*It *might be adventurous, but many of us aren't..lol

All the same, *staunch* is wound related and support related. I've never seen the word *stanch* used in the UK for either.

And I never said you did.

Seems to me that I'm not the one with the difficulty in understanding the language here. [:D]

For what its worth, I've never come across the word "stanch" before he brought it up, that's why I looked it up. Its not in the Canadian Oxford dictionary, so it must be another case of an American spelling, so we have another colour/color issue.

Sorry to interrupt the brewing argument here but I have always thought it was staunch so I don't see that one. Also we must forget all this to address an issue of more import. However to keep the peace in CMania, you don't say your car needs an headlight replaced in England do you ?

But there are much more pressing issues. While the problem of "understand" becoming "derstand" has been properly dismissed there is another even more pressing issue. This came up today actually. In a piece of equipment I found a safety device that seemed to be redundant not to be redundant.

Therefore it is dundant correct ? Is the lack of redundancy then dundancy ?

Enquiring minds need to know, especially those which are enjoying a more than moderate level of insanity. That's why I brought it up here......

Thanks, Christina! This immediately brought to mind untied.com, a United Airlines complaint site. It used to have a picture of a United plane's nose held together with duct tape.

Now back to the topic at hand. This thread has been more entertaining (and educational) than I ever dreamed!

So ladies and Edwynn (sorry Ed but when I saw the spelling of your name I immediately thought of Jeff Dunham and Peanut's schtick about unneeded letters here), was I incorrect in the use of 'affectation' here?:
quote:

Slashy speak, and folks that capitalize 'Me', 'Mine', 'You', 'Your' in the middle of a sentence and not after a period...anything but proper-English 'I'. Bastardizing the English language in this way just looks like a dumb affectation to me.

Edwynn -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 8:26:47 PM)

Nope. Spot on in fact.

playfulotter -> RE: Yes, I AM the spelling police! (10/20/2011 8:35:30 PM)

I have a bunch of pet peeves about spelling but try and not let them bother me...the one that seems to shine on a site like this a lot though is the number of men who spell the word "tongue" as "tounge"..I am not sure if women do it too but it is annoying....The saddest part is that they use the word in their profiles or in emails at all!

I've always used staunch when (I guess) I should have used stanch, but in my defense I read a lot of books from UK authors, and I prefer some of their usage to our Americanized version.

edited because I can't spellz

if I remember correctly, at least I think it was you who mentioned it, you're really not big on cleanliness...that you don't see it as that big a deal to have things lying around your house and to be picked up and put away. For me, that right there would drive me insane and we probably wouldn't hit it off. It's probably something I would notice just from us sitting down to a cup of coffee because that's how I am. I pick up on small details like that.

Yeah, that was me, and I imagine you would probably pick up on it pretty quickly if you have a talent for that sort of thing. Truthfully it isn't as much that I don't see it as a big deal as that having things especially clean actually bothers me. I mean I want things to smell nice and not look like an episode of hoarders, but what your typical person pictures when they think 'clean' eats away at my inner peace lol. I'm almost tempted to put up a picture of my living room to demonstrate - it's looking especially trashed at the moment.

To each their own, I suppose, but I still have trouble with the idea that conscientiousness and dominance are connected traits.
