I ran across this in another thread, quoted by Fightdirector I guess. I don't know the origin but..... ""Tricky Dick" Nixon called in Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Army General Alexander Haig (who was serving as White House Chief Of Staff at the time) to a private meeting at the White House and asked what they thought of his idea to use Executive Emergency Powers to declare martial law and have Army troops from Fort Myer arrest the Congress to prevent them from impeaching him. General Haig (in one of the few good things he ever did in his professional life) told President Nixon - his Commander-In-Chief, "Sir, the United States military would refuse to support you and would refuse to follow your orders." Nixon resigned the Presidency a few hours later. " Now with FOIA we can get more, most likely it's on the web if you look in the right places. But assuming this is true, why resign ? First of all Nixon wasn't too bad of a President, he only did a few things out of the ordinary, taking the advice of the "advisors" most of the time. Actually some people I knew heard some things, actually parts of the famous Nixon tapes that contained very strong anti-Jew remarks. I don't say Semitic because from what I heard it was pretty fucking specific. (that shit'll getya in trouble) But understanding the process of impeachement, other Presidents have been impeached and did not necessarily have to resign. However, the next step after an impeachemnt is a criminal charge. This was not a problem for Clinton for some reason. Well just what did Nixon do ? He refused to turn over some tapes, so the fuck what ? I think he made a mistake in resigning. An impeachment does not mean removal per se, but apparently in this country it stops any criminal charges. [ETA : if the President resigns] Now if he had told Liddy and the boys to break into the Watergate, and they had tapes of him doing this, for there to be a criminal charge he would have had to be acting in his official capacity. I don't believe he was. As such, since the RICO statute was not yet extant, he was as innocent as Gotti until that RICO act actually happened. Remembr I did say I know how to gamble. Check out this link : http://www.pokerplayer.co.uk/news/features/298/richard_nixon.html I think he folded, thinking that his enemies were too numerous in congress. They did vote to impeach, but advisors are the ones who got him to resign. He could have finished out his second term. Conversely if he would have actually been convicted by congress he would have lost his Presidential pension. No way he would have ever seen the inside of a jail cell. I think he was getting old. And really, the media had a hell of alot to do with it. But the fact is he folded. T^T (note the link about Nixon is not from this country)
