Tell me again why food and gas should be exempt from inflation figures?

I mean hell, we're in the midst of endlessly dissecting Cain's tax plan to show the impact on the poor, when the same folks spend a higher percentage of their income on the two things we don't count.

Owner59 -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 10:29:31 AM)

subrob1967 -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 10:31:28 AM)

You shouldn't worry about it, the President has a PLAN... He only needs five hundred billion more dollars, the three point six TRILLION he already spent in 2011 just isn't enough.

Owner59 -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 10:43:08 AM)

well, of course thats not counted, silly! The govt has appearances to keep up after all.. just like how the unemployment rate doesnt include the unemployed that have given up looking, or the under-employed or the other various disqualifications that skew the number.. I mean seriously, if ya told people the real unemployment rate and real inflation rate.. well,.. well,.. well, they might just stop paying their taxes!!!

But i think thats why the misery index was invented (& other indexes).. to give another view of whats going on.. I personally dont pay attention to the inflation or supposed unemployment rate anyway.. I am surprised anyone does..

Food and energy are included in inflation for the misery index and for Social Security increases. Not sure what youre getting at.

And Obama wants "free trade" with Chile, Colombia and S. Korea!
How many more hundreds of thousand jobs will we lose there?

Remember my thread about the Republican jobs bill containing free trade deals? Sounds like politicians from both parties are in the wrong on this issue. Since  Republicans think health care is a privilege instead of a right, I figure Democrats are the lesser of the 2 evils.

Dont pretend to know what "Republicans" think. You are wrong again on this one.

mnottertail -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 12:23:46 PM)

Agreed. Thinking is not a strong suit with the vast part of them republican fellers.

Personally, I toss darts when I want insight into the inconsequential.

servantforuse -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 7:08:34 PM)

Jimmy Carter invented the misery index and Obama is keeping the streak going. Go Dems.

erieangel -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 8:43:52 PM)

Food and gasoline and home heating costs are not included in figuring COLAs for social security increases.  That's why there has been no social security increase for several years--I believe 2008 was the last year recipients got raises.

Edwynn -> RE: Misery index rising (10/20/2011 10:08:28 PM)

Not true;

http://www.bls.gov/cpi/cpiqa.htm

"Has the BLS removed food or energy prices in its official measure of inflation?

No. The BLS publishes thousands of CPI indexes each month, including the headline All Items CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) and the CPI-U for All Items Less Food and Energy. The latter series, widely referred to as the "core" CPI, is closely watched by many economic analysts and policymakers under the belief that food and energy prices are volatile and are subject to price shocks that cannot be damped through monetary policy. However, all consumer goods and services, including food and energy, are represented in the headline CPI."

"Most importantly, none of the prominent legislated uses of the CPI excludes food and energy. Social security and federal retirement benefits are updated each year for inflation by the All Items CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Individual income tax parameters and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) returns are based on the All Items CPI-U."

http://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/latestCOLA.html

"How is a COLA calculated?

The Social Security Act specifies a formula for determining each COLA. According to the formula, COLAs are based on increases in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). CPI-Ws are calculated on a monthly basis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics."
