LafayetteLady -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 8:20:55 PM)

Uh, got a link or something?

RexDarcy -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 8:33:19 PM)

I don't have a link (yet) but a guy that had several exotic animals on his wildlife refuge let them off his property then killed himself. Most of the animals were killed because they were aggressive towards the people trying to capture them.

HannahLynn -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 8:45:15 PM)

yea that was in the newspapers, like a whole bunch of fucking tigers shot. pissed me right the fuck off!

Thanks for the link. I read the story, just didn't pay attention to where it was.

MOTHERFUCKER
DAMNDAMNDAMN

Fucking PETA will get their hands on this and use it to promote even more laws banning exotic pet ownership. I wish that fucker would come back to life so I could kill him again!
I cry inside for the poor beauties who were shot though.

This has seriously pissed me off.

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 9:17:17 PM)

Whatever happened to tranq guns anyway?

Tranq guns are scarce and sometimes several hours away. Children are playing in their backyards now. I feel for the animals but I think the police made the right (difficult) decision.

kdsub -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 9:29:21 PM)

It was getting dark... they were afraid they would loose some animals using tranquilizers...Can't have lions and tigers and bears running among the kiddies standing on the street corner waiting for a school bus the next morning now can we?

They did the right thing but what a tragedy.

Butch

Tantriqu -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 9:34:10 PM)

As one of the links states, one of the danger of using tranquilising darts is the delay between a dart hitting a dangerous animal and the time for it to be rendered unconscious. The example they gave is an animal escaping, and then becoming conscious again before they could find it. And remember, it's not like in the movies, one shot, one dart in a vulnerable place and they're instantly and safely down.
As the article also said, it was the man's last 'f- you' to his neighbours who had complained before about escaped animals, and to police.

"Fucking PETA will get their hands on this and use it to promote even more laws banning exotic pet ownership."

If we care anything about these animals at all, let's hope that's exactly what happens. All the animal rights groups are completely against laws allowing such ownership, for good reason.

Most humans are not up to the task but just do not realize it, being as that proper accommodation of such animals requires extraordinary devotion of time, several acres, at the least, and financial resources beyond what these people can realistically provide.

If the situation in Zanesville had broken at, say, 5:00 AM, then the various agencies might have been able to save half or more of the animals. But being that it occurred just at dusk, they had to quickly tranquilize those they could and shoot the rest when it became too dark to be able to pursue the tranquilized, who can run for a good distance before finally lying down. Living under the conditions that those animals lived in, they would have been far more unpredictable than any animal experts could be of help with. People lived in the area, and the safe choice had to be made.

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 9:39:36 PM)

Just because there are a few wackjobs, is no reason to ban something altogether- if regulations are in place and met.
Exotic pet owners are not just a flight of fancy, they are important in many ways to the healthy survival of species.

Edwynn -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 9:45:32 PM)

Sorry, but that is complete hogwash.

Destruction of habitat of their natural environment is a problem that the odd one-in-100 million lion owners or chimpanzee or leopard owners could not counteract in 200 million years.

If one wants to save a species, avoiding fast food would contribute far more to the cause than taking a lion as a pet. Not because of not eating the fast food chicken or burgers, as such, but to avoid the destruction of habitat and environment involved in that process.

Buy local.

tolovetolaugh -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 10:02:36 PM)

O please, banning exotic pets will lead to massive amounts of dead lions tigers and bears. One problem is they ban without any idea set up as to what they will do with the animals. The ban is more to salve public outrage, and in no state have they ever researched how to do it properly.

And private ownership of exotics is extremely beneficial to species.
quote:

Private owners of exotic animals have become the final hope for many endangered species recovery programs through conservation research, release programs, and by being a portal through which the general public can view and appreciate disappearing wildlife

http://www.rexano.org/ConservationPages/ResolutionFrame.htm
That one is a bit vague though, I will find a more detailed link in the morning.

For now let me just say private owners add to captive genepools to help prevent massive inbreeding of many species that are endangered. Anyone who is against it... is probably misinformed, or paranoid and afraid because of asshats like this cowardly piece of shit.

I remember writing a speech on this very topic in high school in the early 80's. Everyone thought I was crazy to even think that was possible...until a few years later it was shown to be true.

Sorry, I think it's awful that this whole fiasco happened but the authorities were correct in doing what they did. The state however was crazy to wait this long to enact this ban even though this isn't the first time they've had to deal with this problem.

If you want to save exotic animals, placing them in your home isn't it. Saving their environment is.

Edwynn -> RE: Awful.... (10/21/2011 10:16:09 PM)

Thanks for pointing that out. I am aware of such private properly run preserves. But I don't think PETA or the Humane Society are pursuing groups like that at all, nor do I think this latest fiasco reflects on them at all or will cause any disturbance to their efforts. To claim that PETA is now going to dive-bomb such legitimate groups because of this incident is just melodrama, methinks.

I'm sorry you missed out on the point being made in the prior post, though. Destruction of habitat should be the focus of anyone who cares for these critters at all. Preserves as a last ditch effort to save a species is in fact an acceptance of the status quo that put these animals to such a fate in the first place.

Thanks for the link, but I think these people are a bit over the top, here:

http://www.rexano.org/ConservationPages/ResolutionFrame.htm

"Whereas private owners of exotic animals have become the spokespersons for vanishing wildlife, carrying the conservation message of habitat loss, endangered species, and preservation of nature's threatened wild lands to the public ... "

This group has made quite a load of convenient suppositions there, to their favor. They shoved everyone else concerned with the environment and natural habitats out of the way and pronounced themselves as the 'twue' spokespersons.

How nice. How convenient.

Good! PETA really annoys me but if this is the result I'm all for it. Exotic animals belong in their natural habitat PERIOD! I hate, hate, hate zoos and circuses that use animals, to me that is just wrong.

LaughingVampire -> RE: Awful.... (10/22/2011 6:03:56 AM)

To think, if that guy was a CM user he would have been keeping a completely different variety of pet, avoiding such a tragedy.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Awful.... (10/22/2011 11:51:05 AM)

Evidently he had been cited for mistreatment of the animals, but the authrities decided they couldt do anything since he was not keeping the animals for viewing...
