FelinePersuasion -> Is a certificate of completion just as good as a GED (5/24/2006 9:37:53 PM)

When I finish up the deficient courses I assume I'll get a certificate of completion since i went back to adult ed to do it. Is that as valaid as a GED? I mean if it was a choice between them expecting a diploma or a GED does a certificate of completion still cover the requirement to have finished highschool?

Feline....It depends on the employer.  What you would need to do is check with whom ever you place job applications to see if a certificate of completion will be satisfactory.  In my experiences though, it has not been enough...hell they even look at me odd when I tell them I have my GED.  To some employers a GED or certificate of completion shows them a lack of fortitude.  In other words I was a failure because I did not go through the pomp and circumstance of a high school "graduation".

So again all I can say is check with those employers either before you fill out application or give them a call to see if the certificate will be acceptable.

Feline,
Most adult ed courses, at least the ones that I have referred people in my area to, honor you with a diploma if you have met all of the requirements of high school education. They generally work on the same credit system and once the credits are completed you graduate. They also offer courses that are not required or related to graduation for those who simply wish to expand their horizons. It really depends on the curriculum you are enrolled in. You may want to check with the one you are attending.

In NY you need to take a final test to get a GED, stupid GED's

Moloch I'm not taking GED's thankfully lol. I am going back to adult ed "highschool" essentially.  I assume, that I'll take the courses I am deficient in, such as history, and then be done w/ith it.  Hopefully I can get into independant studies, where I'll be in class 2 hours once a week not 6 hours starting at 8 am and lasting till 3 pm, every so manydays.

I am in the middle of studying for my GED right now. It's hard and it damn ass better count when I go looking for a job. Actually I will be getting my associates degree after this so that should help with the job search.

Good luck in your studies Feline! [:)]

generally no nor is a GED as good as a diploma in most cases.
It does depend on what the employer will accept.

A bachelor's degree in pshycology for example won't get you a job
in that field. It takes at least a masters.

It depends also on what your goals are, if any.

It is not as valid as a GED. A diploma indicates you fulfilled all requirements and graduated. A GED indicates that while you did not graduate, you fulfilled all academic requirements to complete secondary school. A certificate of completion is mostly used to "graduate" students who completed full attendance but cannot pass requirements. It is also used to "graduate" students under an alternative set of requirements when they could not pass the regular requirements.

Certificates of completion are roughly the equivilant of social promotion for "graduation" purposes. They are almost never accepted in place of a GED/diploma, especially for university education and federal programs. However, you should check with your state to see exactly what their requirements are and what benefits the certificate of completion may have.

I have found the following contact information for the CA's education department for this program:
Jill Larson, Consultant, Assessment, Evaluation, and Support Unit, at (916) 323-7192 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Assessment, Evaluation and Support Unit at (916) 445-4628

Jill Larson is listed as the contact person for any questions regarding the program.

The second number is the main phone number for the department that handles the program.

Hope that helps.

I am not sure how different it is to up here, but there are actual adult learning centers that are part of the Board of Education.  When you pass your needed courses you get your diploma.  I would not waste my time on any other type of "school".

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Is a certificate of completion just as good as a GED (5/28/2006 7:59:04 PM)

I wouldn't either SK. Grant union Adult ed is part of the school system for adults.

SirKenin -> RE: Is a certificate of completion just as good as a GED (5/28/2006 8:30:43 PM)

Perfect, then you should get your GED.
