Lately the polls show him taking a huge leap. Whispers and rumblings of him potentially running against Obama have made the circuits.

Morgan posed a question about banning abortion, even in the case of rape or incest, and from his response, you’d almost think Cain was a women’s rights activist:

“No, it comes down to is, it’s not the government’s role — or anybody else’s role — to make that decision. Secondly, if you look at the statistical incidents, you’re not talking about that big a number. So what I’m saying is, it ultimately gets down to a choice that family or that mother has to make. Not me as president. Not some politician. Not a bureaucrat. It gets down to that family. And whatever they decide, they decide. I shouldn’t try to tell them what decision to make for such a sensitive decision.”

Could not agree with him more on this issue.

Then he says this....

Indeed.

Of course, Cain will probably disavow that statement and claim that he misspoke, and prostrate himself before the iron-fisted anti-choice altar, but once it’s out there it can’t be taken back, and these TeaPublicans are unforgiving. They have no interest and no patience for those who don’t toe the dogmatic line, and we all know that women’s rights have become the battle of choice for the Republican Party, and they’re not going to give any slack to any candidate who shows a modicum of moderation or sanity.

But it is hard to decide if Cain is waffling on the issue, or if he doesn’t understand the issue, if he’s simply pandering to get the votes, or if he’s just plain stupid, but this is not the first time he’s been – unclear, shall we say. In an interview with John Stossel of Fox News back in July, he gave a similarly confused breakdown of his “position,” such as it is or as one can figure out:

Cain: I’m pro-life from conception, yes.

Stossel: Any cases where it should be legal?

Cain: I don’t think government should make that decision.

Stossel: People should be free to abort a baby?

Cain: I support life from conception. No, people shouldn’t just be free to abort because if we don’t protect the sanctity of life from conception, we will also start to play God relative to life at the end of life.

Stossel: So I’m confused on what your position is.

Cain: My position is I’m pro-life. Period.

Stossel: If a woman is raped, she should not be allowed to end the pregnancy?

Cain: That’s her choice. That is not government’s choice. I support life from conception.

Stossel: So abortion should be legal?

Cain: No, abortion should not be legal. I believe in the sanctity of life.

Im confused... I think he is even more confused.

Reminds me of Mittens.  He would like to see a Constitutional amendment that life begins at conception.  Unfortunately, such beliefs not only would make it illegal to get an abortion, it would also make it a possible criminal offense for a woman to miscarry.  And then there is the issue of contraceptives, most of which don't prevent conception but do prevent the fertilized  egg from becoming implanted in the uterine wall.  So if life begins at conception, most forms of birth control would be illegal.

I don't know why it's so hard to understand.

He doesn't like abortion, but doesn't think that government should be the ones making the decision.

Sounds like a moral libertarian position.

What's the problem with understanding that?

Going by just the words in your post, no links or other sources, it sounds to me like he has a personal position and a political position on abortion.

He think that abortion is wrong, but he does not think that he should be the one making that choice for others.

That actually seems rather sane to me.

This would be a position I could support but he has spent much of the week trying to unring the bell.

Curious....

It shouldnt be legal.... Then he is saying it should be illegal.

It should be between a woman and her dr.... so he is advocating Drs and patients committing a crime

Campaigning in New Hampshire on Thursday, Santorum accused Cain of misleading voters about his conservative credentials.

“It’s basically the position that just about every pro-choice politician has in America,” Santorum told The Associated Press. “I don’t know too many pro-choice politicians who are for abortion, who want more abortions ... but they say the decision is a choice the government shouldn’t be involved in.”

Santorum added: “That is Herman Cain’s position, which does not make him pro-life. That is the quintessential pro-choice position on abortion.”

In a statement released in the wake of Santorum’s remarks, Cain said he thought he was being asked on CNN whether he would, as president, “order” people to not seek abortions.

“My answer was focused on the role of the president. The president has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey,” he said. “As to my political policy view on abortion, I am 100 percent pro-life. End of story.”

Cain said he would do “everything that a president can do, consistent with his constitutional role, to advance the culture of life.”

Cain has walked back two other statements recently. A day after saying that he wanted a potentially deadly electrified fence to keep out illegal immigrants, he told NBC on Sunday that he had been joking. On Tuesday, hours before a GOP candidate debate, Cain told CNN that as president he would negotiate for the release of American hostages held by al-Qaida in exchange for all prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay facility in Cuba. He later said he had misunderstood the question and that he would not negotiate with the terrorist group..

Tazzy did you see Stoosel's jaw hang open at the end there...?
Come on Firm....the man's position seems to be that he doesn't have one..he is against abortion and pro life....yet it is between a woman and her Doctor...yet after he does everything in his power to outlaw it that "doctor" might just be operating out of the back of a butcher shop wielding a hanger as a medical instrument.
An extreme characterization perhaps...but all the same running for President is serious business, last time around the Republicam party tried to foist Sarah Palin upon this nation....now you folks are putting forth this clown who needs to backtrack from statements three times a week, electrified fences one night....just joking the next...wait that is my position and I am not backing away from it.
Exchanging hostages with al queda one moment.....no I didn't realize that was who I was supposed to be dealing with....we don't negotiate with terrorists.....but I could see myself doing it.
The fact that this motivational speaker is leading in the polls for the Republican Party is,or at least should be,a fucking disgrace to any red blooded republican.
Please get the fuck serious and start offering this damm country an actual choice!!!!!!!!
