Thanks for the idea, Lucy.

The threads here more often than not are about bashing one politician or another.

Here is a little task for everyone.

Forget who is running and who isnt. Forget your party platforms.

Then, list all the traits you feel are needed to make someone a "good" politician, in your eyes.

After that list is made, name the one person you feel most closely fits your description. It doesnt have to be someone running now... it could even be someone who is dead. If you decide to post, I would prefer only serious posts. And, of course, there will be bashing by all sides!

Myself, a good politician puts his constituents first.
Whatever platform he/she runs on doesnt change.
None of this "I meant" crap.... but having the balls to stand up and say "yes I said that".
Someone who isnt afraid to admit they dont know it all... and surrounds themselves with people who know more in areas he/she lacks.
Someone who is just as comfortable in a Throne room as he/she is in a diner on main street.
Someone who takes the problems of our country and listens, thinks, then decides.
Someone who isnt afraid to get their hands dirty in work or politics.
Someone with a backbone to try new ideas and toss aside the grumblings of those from yesteryear.
Marriage (or lack of), religion, personal beliefs or wallets shouldnt make a difference to this person... they arent there to represent themselves, their own interest, or the interests of their friends.... but the interests of this country.
Someone who isnt afraid to reach across party lines to come up with good, solid solutions to our problems.
Someone who isnt worried about what the press, or the "other side of the isle" may say.
Someone who isnt in with the mindset of 4 more years, but someone who is there with the mindset of.. what can I do with THESE four years.
Someone who has taken the time to learn the history of our country, its inner workings, its political tickings, the diverse nature of its population, and who eagerly embraces the beliefs this country was founded upon.
Someone who realizes they were hired as CEO of the US and not the King.
Someone who has no issue with opening their books and their lives to public scrutiny.

Someone above board in all aspects.

Frankly, I cant think of anyone who fits that bill currently. Maybe I can later.

Go ahead and laugh .. But Jerome John Garcia ... and if it was for president, I'd want Robert Hunter for his Veep for one simple reason (when he gets on a tear, he makes Dick Cheney look like a pussy).
And there's my list why... (and
Intelligence well beyond the average
left/right brain activity
Business Sense
True Sense Of Justice
True Compassion for the human race
Environmentally Aware
A positive vison of the future
The Strength of Character To Want To Stand up to whomever tries to run our society from the shadows.
The total lack of regard for their 'importance' allowing him to tell those 'powers' to fuck off.
A real good sense of humor
Enough real experience with human suffering to appreciate it.
Gets DIGNITY and SELF DETERMINATION with all the trimmings are in fact RIGHTS.
Not Afraid of Bikers (If you can walk up to the Hell's Angels and say "you can stay, but you gotta be nice", the Despots of the world ain't shit)
Lastly the ability to realize when you've fucked up and try to reverse it all, no matter how difficult that is

I want honesty ...and I want it to be consistent honesty.
Vision...and I want it to be of a positive nature(naturally,if your vision of our future is "dark and depressive" I'm not voting for you)
I don't want to hear all that much about your faith,it is yours and god bless you for having it....I and my fellow citizens will take care of our faith/ or not in whatever way we so choose...you do the same.
I want you to be a proud American...but let us not hear too much about "American exceptionalism",we all feel lucky to be Americans...but this land we wrested from Native Americans came with all the natural resources a man might need, two oceans, friendly neighbors to the north and inept neighbors to the south.Prospering in this great land was no big deal given all of our bounties.
A healthy, even reverent regard for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights ..absent any litmus test for the Supreme Court other than an exceptional legal mind with the same reverent regard for the Constitution.
If married...respect that marriage....I can not trust a man whose own wife can not trust him.( sorry that sounds mancentric ,reverse the genders assigned to allow for an exceptional woman to lead this country...I truly do not care what my Presidents gender is)
Give me this...give me a man/woman with an agile mind...and he/she has my vote.

Plain and simple, they represent who elected them long before party affiliations.

But then is party affiliation the problem, because parties tell the representitives how to vote, which might be contrary to those that elected the representitive, so perhaps the answer is if you want your views represented, vote for an independent that closely matches your stance.

Unless of course you feel your views are represented by a party.

With me, never the case, tis why I vote independant.

I'm not sure I know what a "good" politician is, because the connotation of "politician" is pretty negative.

I know what an "honest" politician is, however.  He is one who stays bought, when you bribe him.

mike,

Asking people what a "good" politician is, is like asking what the "best dog" is, or the "ideal mate".

None of them exist,  All politicians are people.

I believe a good politician is an oxymoron.

One who has compassion for people at the bottom of the food chain
One who cant be bought by greed
One who tries to speak the truth
One who doesnt promise what he cannot realistically deliver

One who can keep his humanity even with all the corruption and lies around him
Hence an oxymoron

A good politician is a man or women who isn't a politician at all.

The concept of our national government's elected officials was the "yeoman farmer" or businessman who took time out from his life, and served a little while in public office, as a moral duty.  That "public service" thang that we so often hear about.

But what it all too often has turned into is an incestuous political elite who come to Washington with the intent of a life-time occupation, or become seduced by it, and never seeming to get enough of it.  All too often, they see everyone and the entire world through a slanted prism of politics, ideology and deal-making that divorces them from daily human concerns (but they can often talk a good line).  "Go along to get along" becomes their mantra, and "if I give you this, what will you give me?" becomes their operating moral principle.

It is power and status that draws them, keeps them and corrupts them.

I want someone who has had success in his chosen field and has shown that he can organize, communicate and lead.

I don’t think it important to put voters first… they are not always right and often too emotional…as many have proven here with their posted requirements…I want a politician that states his position and what he will do if elected and says vote for me if you agree and stick to his promises.

I would like to see Butch Davis run…he is the only person I trust to represent me properly.

Butch

This isn't an attempt to convince anyone to support Cain, but to point out a specific issue with the current crop of candidates as examples.

In another thread, we've talked about "who's to blame", and I've said it's the voters.

I'll give you one example of why.

tazzy, here is your list, which I'm going to highlight certain ones by excluding others.  (This is an example only, because you gave a pretty good list.  It's not that I'm trying to pick on just you, personally):

Myself, a good politician puts his constituents first.

I think all of these are pretty close to describing Herman Cain.  But I also know that you have started several threads bashing him, or at least, attempting to throw doubt out about him (yes, your interpretation may vary, but I'm just calling it the way I see it).

My point is that I see some pretty "good" descriptions of what people say they want, but when someone close to that comes along, then you (the generic "you") will find this or that nit to pick and declare him persona non grata.

What I don't like about Cain's 9-9-9 plan is that he introduces a new type of tax (the national sales tax).  I am ideologically against doing any such thing.  But ... he ain't sugar coating the fact that it is a new tax, and he meets many (if not most) of the other criteria that are listed and that I agree with.

We can cry about there not being any "good politicians", but the problem is as much within ourselves, as within our politicians.

Firm
