Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin.....beautiful writing
Tiger, Tiger by Alfred Bester........arguably one of the best SF novels ever written
Small Gods by Terry Pratchett.........so you can laugh and ponder the meaning of mercy and forgiveness at the same time

Kedikat -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 3:10:30 AM)

The Minds I, by Douglas Hoffsteader ( spelling? )
A very mind expanding book. It is a collection of short stories, by various authors, each one illustrating a concept of perception and reality.
I have given away 3 copies of it. I like to watch people read the first story.....and flip back after a few pages to reread.....they may have already found out something about their perceptions and preconceptions.
The final story strips away concepts of being alive, thinking, time, reality.
Read it in order, it builds on the ideas by steps.

Freakonomics.
Some very interesting different ways of looking at statistics......not as dry as it sounds. Consider how Roe V Wade has affected the crime rate. This guy makes some very obvious conections between what seem distant things.

Isaac Asimovs Guide to the Bible.
Find out what most of the bible is really talking about.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
All of them. Just good fun. Great philosophy.
Don't Panic.

The Man Who Folded Himself.
A man travels in time. Finds himself in all his/her incarnations. Comes to terms with all he and others can be.

Cosmos.
Get the big hardcover edition. Beautiful pictures of our universe.

Bester was a fantastic writer, I agree. Here in the U.S. that novel is called The Stars My Destination.... also recommended is his The Demolished Man.

If you like short stories and classic science-fiction, pick up Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions...

Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller... On The Road by Jack Kerouac...... Post Office by Charles Bukowski.....

KatyLied -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 3:53:02 AM)

John Irving, especially "A Prayer for Owen Meany", "The Cider House Rules", "A Widow for One Year", "The Fourth Hand". (if you dislike dysfunctional, wacky characters, don't read him)
At the moment:
Madonna Gauding, "The Meditation Bible: A Definitive Guide to Meditations for Every Purpose"
Currently reading: Kim Edwards: "The Memory Keeper's Daughter"

bandit25 -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 3:57:24 AM)

candy, it really depends on what you are looking for.  I read mysteries for mind candy.  Course I am a speed reader so I can "waste" time with a less than great book.  I love the vampire genre.  Or anything otherwordly.  But I must agree, Isaac A. is fantastic.  If you want, message me off list and let me know what you are looking for.

KatyLied -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 3:58:04 AM)

That is my favorite Irving book!
My new picture was not approved, at least not as a primary.  sigh.   And they will not reinstate my old picture.

philosophy -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 4:31:20 AM)

ooooh, ta level.....i'd forgotten that titles of books sometimes differ according to which side of the pond you are. Incidentally, SF trivia fans, the psychic character Bester in Babylon 5 was an Alfred........probably a tribute to his The Demolished Man, which is an object lesson in how to 'write' telepathy.
Sorry, but if they ever have an SF weakest link, i'm signing up for it......lol

MDPA1962 -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 4:34:07 AM)

My favorite Book, Has always been... Starship Troopers... its quite a thought Provoking Political Novel, Not the Typical Sci-Fi Most people think

And there is a Part in there where they are discussing Corporal Punishment and the Breakdown of Society and Its Rules and Order as Happens In the (then) past of the Late 20th century that I feel is Especially relevant to the BDSM lifestyle and How it applies today

MDPA1962 -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 4:36:16 AM)

Sorry also Forgot to add The Books The Ellenium and the Tamuli By David Eddings.... Wonderful Sets of Books, 6 in all...

Harumph....... I've heard folks have trouble at times getting pics approved here. It'll be awhile before I even try, so I haven't had the "pleasure" yet lol. Hopefully you'll keep trying, Katy........ until then *gets out juju bag... puts mojo hex on collarme*

As for Irving, it's the only book of his I've read as of yet, but I love the film version of "The World According To Garp".

Any favorite Ellison stories, twice?

OTKkindaGirl -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 5:10:12 AM)

The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind - i am addicted to these books, and waiting for the next one to come out.  i believe most sadists and masochist will have an appreciation for the mord sith characters. [;)]
  •  Wizards First Rule
  •  Stone of Tears
  •   Blood of the Fold
  •   Temple of the Winds
  •   Soul of the Fire
  •   Faith of the Fallen
  •   The Pillars of Creation
  •   Naked Empire
  •   Debt of Bones
  •   Chainfire

i also have a deep appreciation for anything written by Anne Rice - here are my favorite series by her.  She has something daring and new out that i cannot wait to get my hands on.
  • The Sleeping Beauty Series
  • The Vampire Chronicles
  • The Mayfair Witches Series

i have a weakness for Jean M. Aule's The Earth Children Series as well.  Her books actually influenced my outlook on life, as i read them during the impressionable years.
  • Clan of the Cave Bear
  • The Valley of the Horses
  • The Mammoth Hunters
  • The Plains of Passage

Hmm.... i didn't realize that i was partial to Series books,  i guess i like remaining true to the characters i relate to.  My list could go on and on but i figure if you want more you'll ask.

And i love and try to read everything by Stephen King.  To many to list.

philosophy -> RE: Please Recommend Y/your Favorite Books (5/25/2006 5:10:45 AM)

ugg...she's found religion!  her last book was about Christ...and I don't think it's supposed to be as much fun as her other stuff...
