Status: offline 		The Airloom Gang by Michael Jay - This is a history book about the first recorded schizophrenic patient to be controled by a machine rather than demons. It's a fascinating insight into how someone rationalising their experiences as a form of protection creates a form of madness.

The Affairs Of The Poisons - by Anne Somerset- Again a history book on how rumour and suspicion can get out of hand and did at the court of Loius XIV.

Sleeping Beauty series (Anne Rice)
Aimee & Jaguar (Erica Fischer)
Tipping the Velvet (Sarah Waters)
and pretty much anything by the above author..i have them all.
A Paper Life (Tatun O'Neal)
Angels & Demons (Dan Brown)
The Journals of Anais Nin (Anais Nin)
Intensity (Dean Koontz)
Surviving Madness (Betty Berzon)
Anne of Green Gables Series (L.M. Montgomery)
After All (Mary Tyler Moore)
 
              and probably the other 150 books i have...to me..it's almost like picking out your favorite relative or child.. impossible to really do.  Each one was for a reason..brought you something special.. took you someplace new.. introduced a new friend into your life... got you thru a hard time and helped you cope..and hopefully helped you laugh a bit in the process.  That is why i enjoy reading so much.. even if i am stuck in this apt..in this horrid town.. i can be walking thru the galleries of Paris..sailing on the Atlantic... being taken savagely, while tied to a bed by a man named Rockard.......
           
*going thru boxes of books..shelves of books..looking franticly.. aha..there it is... going to bedroom..shutting door.. getting in bed with Rockard for a while.....

any of Dave Eggers' short stories
also, the whole Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, perhaps with Good Omens by Pratchett and Neil Gaiman first.

This will be boring for most.... but if you like important, modern day history,  the best book I've read in a long time is one I finished a few months back. It's called ''Against Oligarchy'' - Essays & speeches 1970-1996 by Webster Tarpley.

It draws parallels between modern day America and the death of the Weimar Republic, the predecessor to Hitler and the brown shirts.

It also delves into how/why the British ''pound'' was taken down as the world’s dominant currency and the theory /lead-up to the great depression.

I probably read it for the first time when I was about 14.  And have reread it countless times since.
It takes me away every single time.

Even though a great part of it was fabricated, by Frey's own admission?  Though if Oprah was fooled, it must be good.  I haven't read it, but it does sound interesting!

Status: offline 		"The Amber Chronicles" and all of the short stories he ever wrote, especially "Now For a Breath I Tarry" and "Engine at Heartspring's Center" by Roger Zelazny.  He's the man that made me love sci-fi and fantasy at a young age, a"nd I've been able to grow up with his works.  They never get old, just more complex each time you read them.

"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley.  Changes your perspective quite a bit.

"Anthem" by Ayn Rand.  Ditto.

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell.  It only takes an hour or so.  Everyone deserves to read it at some point.

"Villette" by Charlotte Bronte.  So sweet.  So good.  I have a weakness for period pieces.

Not specifically BDSM related, but definitely a great read to better understand female sexuality is "Forbidden Flowers" and "My Secret Garden" by Nancy Friday.  It looks like a flowery romance novel, and it's really not.  It's a book of real women's sexual fantasies ranging from mundane to very out-there, complete with background and possible reasons for their specific fantasies.  It's actually eye-opening to know that some of your darkest fantasies are normal.

Status: offline 		I have to suggest "Einstein's Dreams" by Lightman.

I read it semi-on drugs (it was the day I had my wisdom teeth out) but after re-reading it, I still think it's rather awesome.

"Startship Troopers", and "Stranger in a Strange Land" are also excellent suggestions.  "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is pretty good too as far as Heinlin goes, but the Mistress part has little to do with BDSM (and that's okay, just didn't want to get anyone's hopes up).

"The Heart of Darkness" by Conrad is another book everyone should read (and it's short too!).  On a tangent, I'm currently working my way through Orwell's lesser known work (or rather, less insanely hyped than "1984" or "Animal Farm") and I'd suggest that it might be worth your while to do the same.  "Homage to Catalonia" was pretty neat, and certainly interesting (to me at least).

Any of the Nero Wolfe series by Rex Stout - Archie and Nero may be the best two characters in literature ever.

Anything by Agatha Christie - The Queen Mother of mystery

Anything by John Dickson Carr - A master of the locked room mysteries and an expert on the occult

Horror:

Edgar Allen Poe - Tales of Mystery and Imagination: I do not need to expand on this

Anything by Stephen King - While some do not like King I find his character development to be astounding.

Anything by Dean Koontz - Koontz is a messed up guy. I have yet to read something of his that I didn't like

Clive Barker - The Books of Blood: Barker makes Koontz and King look like Sunday School teachers as far as gore and sheer horror goes.

John Dickson Carr - The Burning Court: One of the scariest books I have ever read

Suspense:

Anything by James Patterson - I have yet to read something from him I didn't like

Anything by Jeffery Deaver - Yet to read something I didn't like from him

Anything from Michael Crichton - Again, I have yet to read anything I didn't like from him

Others:

Harper Lee - To Kill a Mockingbird: I read this book about every other year. It never is dull... ever.

Glen Sire - The Deathmakers: A brutal book based in WW2 which discusses the philosophy of life and death.

Walter M. Miller Jr. - A Canticle for Leibowitz:  I forget the author. This book is a stunning visual experience. It is an interesting commentary on the character of humanity

Anything by Patrick McManus - An outdoor writer, McManus is a humorist and his characters are quite endearing.

Mario Puzo - The Godfather, The Last Don and Omerta: Puzo is simply a marvelous storyteller
