Owner59 -> Condi Rice:we clearly have a race problem (10/24/2011 3:36:40 PM)

Not sure whether to knock Ron Paul out and make her the most honest Republican or to have her tarred and feathered for covering for her nit-wit boss.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said President George W. Bush had a "race problem" during Hurricane Katrina, but she defended him against his critics who, she said, tried to use the "race card" against him, according to excerpts from her upcoming memoir, No Higher Honor, published in Newsweek.

In the book, Rice recounted how she went shopping at the expensive Ferragamo shoe store in New York and returned to her hotel.

The airwaves were filled with devastating pictures from New Orleans. And the faces of most of the people in distress were black. I knew right away that I should never have left Washington. I called my chief of staff, Brian Gunderson. "I'm coming home," I said.
"Yeah. You'd better do that," he answered.

Then I called the President. "Mr. President, I'm coming back. I don't know how much I can do, but we clearly have a race problem," I said

I don't think she meant it the way you want it to mean, Owner.

How do you think she meant it Firm ?

housesub4you -> RE: Condi Rice:we clearly have a race problem (10/24/2011 5:03:22 PM)

It appears clear to me...she had to race back to DC to help with the problem and good old George stayed at the fundraiser he was attending.  So no reason to race back to DC to help with the problem.  Why he knew Good Old Brownie would take care of everyone

I mean what other race problem could it have been...Are you saying that the south has a problem with peoples race and the President would perhaps not do his job because he was not the same race of most of the people suffering and being killed by the police???

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Condi Rice:we clearly have a race problem (10/24/2011 5:06:04 PM)

i think she meant it as "there is an image being created by the media, and we need to handle it."
i don't think she was admitting to any sort of race bias by the former president.

(that said, i do believe there was one. references to "looters" were frequently images of minorities, while images of "finding" (i.e. looting) were of others.

Interesting example of possible mainstream media bias.

Think she was meaning she had a President back in DC that wasn' watching anything but where he could find his next drink or powder. Thing was he was more interested in doing anything than being President...hence the ruination of a nation in less than 10 years.

If you think "Race Problem" refers to Earnhardt's losing streak, you MIGHT be a redneck. [8D]

(couldn't help myself)

Oh really.....how did I mean it,oh great master of political science?[8D]

I think she`s acknowledging that poor people there, mostly black, got the shaft.

Myself,I don`t think bush personally has a problem with blacks or that that was even a factor for him in Katrina.

Katrina was just more evience to poor folks(mostly blacks) that they`re on their own.bush?....just happened to be president.

I`m acknowledging that it`s an image problem that Rice is talking about.

But her comment about being the highest ranking black in the nation, shopping in Times Square while hundreds poor people(mostly black)were drowning, that says something.

She`s not saying bush "doesn`t care about black people"(kanye West),she`s saying that poor people(mostly blacks) all to often are treated like 2nd class citizens in this country.

Which is true.If that`s what she`s saying, that makes her an honest republican.

"Privatizing" FEMA was probably the biggest factor in the slow response, tho. It also seemed like no one was acting.

The cheif of homeland security read a head-line that nothing had happened and left it at that.He probably also learned through the MSM what actually was happening, as the levees broke and water started flowing in to the city,a day or so AFTER the storm passed.

The lack of knowledge and curiosity on the part of our leaders(bush) was inexcusable in Katrina, especially after 9/11.

With all the talk coming from the bushies about "protecting America"at the time,it showed just how incompetent they were about it.

SurrenderForMe -> RE: Condi Rice:we clearly have a race problem (10/24/2011 9:43:41 PM)

I hate racism, despise the Bushes, wives and all.

But what I got from this article was that Rice was referring to the  perception the country and maybe the world would have.  A disaster strikes and the face on it is Black.  When the system failed, because it was not prepared, not necessarily because it was racist, it would be slanted that way because people need to blame someone or something when horror strikes.  Racism is such an easy card to play.

Just to cover it, my father was Black/Portuguese, my mother white and racist.  Too ironic.  I've been one of those people who has stood up whenever someone made racist comments, every time.

A movie that epitomizes my stance is Gentleman's Agreement, starring Gregory Peck.  I used it as a guide for my way of dealing with this and it is an engaging film.  The speech given by the mother is one of the most moving I have ever heard.

I grew up in MA, an insanely racist state.  I lived in CA, a hidden racist state.  Not to optimistic about the rest.  I chose who I associated with and do not and will not tolerate racism or any other ism's near me.

That same system was prepared when Hugo hit.

You`ve pretty much summed up my take on her comments.

Jeezzz if she`s just talking about how bad it looks, she can go to hell with the rest the bushies.
