In Europe, American beer is considered piss.
Why anyone would want to drink a case of weak, fizzy, tasteless slash instead of 6 or 7 decent Real Ales is beyond me.
Some of your bourbons are OK. Combining them with sweet enablers is an abomination.
Single Scottish malts are the drink of the discerning toper.
Reading this thread makes me think you don't deserve any drunks.

See... I am calling foul here.

The biggest selling Scotch in Scotland, by leaps and bounds is Famous Grouse... a Blended Scotch

Why do millions of Scots drink it...because they LIKE it.

Why do millions of Americans drink Budwiser or Miller or Coors... because they LIKE it.

Why do people mix cocktails? Because they are fun and people LIKE them.

See a theme here?

Interesting correlation that I had not really considered. As consumer confidence plummets, home alcohol consumption rises.

quote:

And there's another, perhaps somewhat unsettling, trend pushing up Beam's bottom line: In the wake of the Great Recession, Americans are increasingly drinking at home. According to Commerce Department data compiled by Bloomberg, U.S. spending on alcoholic beverages for off-premises consumption, adjusted for inflation, has gained nearly 13 percent since June 2009, and hit a record in August 2011.

Now this is just disgusting:

quote:

Which brings up another aspect of Beam's product line that may have suitors, possibly including Diageo and Pernod, seeing dollar signs: Red Stag, a black cherry-flavored Jim Beam that's been a smash hit.

I think a lot of it has to do with how so many places have cracked down on drunk drivers. Even just going out to dinner and having a couple of glasses of wine can get you a DUI. Most people just don't think it is worth it, so they drink at home. Of course, having a drink or two at home is also so much less expensive.

This is true. I know that I have to be careful even having a beer or glass of wine. Forget some sort of mixed drink.

I said 'discerning' toper FDD.
Scots are semi pro drunks, very cost aware and will take the best deal for their booze budget.
More burgers than steaks are sold in the U.S does that make them better?
You have perfectly illustrated my point that Americans prefer quantity over quality.
You're buying I think.
I'll take the Glenmorangie 25 yo with thanks and a toast to the colonies.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Drinking at home (10/26/2011 8:56:07 PM)

No matter how much the quantity is, if it taste like ass people won't buy it.

Roadhouse Burger's are good and high end aged Prime Steaks are good.

I'll put Pikesville Rye at $22 a 1.75 against any Bourbon in the country. Does that mean I don't love Michter's 25 year? Heck no... they are both fine tasting whiskeys.

A White Castle slider is one of the best tasting things on the planet.

A deep fried corn dog at a summer festival with yellow mustard opens portholes to nirvana.

Live in absolutes and snobbery if you want.... but I will chose to taste life

LaTigresse -> RE: Drinking at home (10/27/2011 4:34:43 AM)

Aaaaa-aaa-men!

Cept for the White Castle thing I never got. Seriously, I thought that was the WORST burger I have ever eaten.

And to the list, once every year or two I make a trip to a carnival and on the to-do list. Corn dogs and a funnel cake!

Also once every year or two, a trip to KFC. I don't care what anyone says, the Colonel did a fair job frying chicken and the slaw with biscuits rock.

MadAxeman -> RE: Drinking at home (10/27/2011 6:25:36 AM)

Not all of 'life' tastes good.
I'm not a snob, talking to you aren't I FDD?
I enjoy junk food, raw vibrant music and vulgarity as much as anyone.
The American beer that has reached Europe is drunk by kids.
Am told that there are quality ales in the U.S
They don't get here.

Scotch in any shape or form is undrinkable.

Sure - because they don't know any better and get used to garbage from the very beginning
I have seen American tourists spitting out beer in Budweis/Ceske Budejovice because they didn't like the taste - not because it was the real taste of the real thing but because there was a taste at all

I wonder if there is a corresponding increase in pot consumption[8|] and if binging is more common among the more affluent?

You asked [:D]

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new government survey says more Americans are smoking marijuana, but other notorious illegal drugs have fallen off.
Nearly 7 percent of Americans aged 12 or older were illicit pot smokers in 2010, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, released Thursday. That is 3 million more users than earlier in the decade.
At the same time, meth use has plunged by about half and cocaine use — including crack — is down sharply in the last few years.
The annual survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also found declines from 2009 in tobacco use and binge drinking among teens

seems like they are doing as well on the war on drugs as they are on the war on terrorism.  oxymoron

And single Malts should stay the domain of Scotland since they're the only ones who have maintained the strict traditions of the beverage.
Bourbons are an adolescent path similar in course but different enough to be American. Problem with those is too many people get exposed to Jim Beam at an early age.

Yeah, it lacks that fruity taste of women's beverages like Jack Daniels

I agree... both of these open portholes ... so stick close to the porta john after you eat em... specially if you wash em down with a Bud
