Guy's GF came back to the apartment unexpectedly, after he "met someone" on craigslist (note: Denver is an hour's drive from Colorado Springs. The only woman who'd drive an hour to meet someone at his apartment for the first time meeting with a random stranger on CL would be a paid escort).
He figured that he needed to prevent the two of them meeting at any cost, so he phoned the cops to claim that the woman entering his apartment at 3 AM was a burglar.
Truly brilliant, inspired stupidity.
