Wheldrake -> RE: The Ancient Roman Way Of S&M (10/30/2011 3:13:55 PM)

"Ancient Roman" BDSM sounds pretty hot. I've never experienced any of the things described in the OP, but I'd love to have pretty much any of them done to me by some decadent lady of the Imperium (or maybe by her muscular guards, as she reclined on a nearby couch and had some other slave feed her grapes). Being tortured for the amusement of an audience is actually a long-standing fantasy of mine, and I've just finished posting a rather long and involved multi-part story (called "On the Block") that partly revolves around this theme to the Creative Writings board.

I'm not sure about the Romans being "the only cultured and civilized Western society" to have institutionalised public sadism, though. I would argue that the public executions that occurred in most if not all European countries until quite recently, as well as lesser punishments like the pillory, had more than a whiff of sadism about them.

Epytropos, I for one would be interested to hear more about which elements of the OP were historically inaccurate, and whether you would recommend any particular sources of information on what slavery and public spectacles of sadism were really like in the Roman Empire. Who knows, it might be fodder for a story in the future.

HannahLynn, I thought the scoop on crucifixion was that nails would do the job provided they went between the two bones of the forearm rather than through the hand. Or is that an urban myth?

Wow... yep, it may not be my kink, but that's a pretty rockingly intense thang you're describing, and as long as you're thinking about the potential risks and taking sensible precautions, then you all buckle up and get your ancient roman groove on!

I would say, that a couple of the historical facts you claim seem a little open to challenge;

quote:

ORIGINAL: crucifiedslaves
It was the only cultured and civilized Western society to ever legalize and legitimize sadism as a perfectly normal and perfectly natural form of public amusement and public entertainment.

Hmmm... while I'm not aware of other western societies arranging gladiatorial games, public executions (which could be fabulously gruesome) were viewed as a "jolly good day out" among pretty much every Western Society, surely?

quote:

ORIGINAL: crucifiedslaves
It wasn't uncommon back then for wealthy and influential members of the Roman aristocracy to host lavish dinner parties where the guests would eat and drink to excess and where the hostess and host would provide the spectacle of naked slavewomen and naked manslaves being tortured in front of them while they ate and drank, and for no reason at all except to provide them with an exciting and thrilling bit of amusement and entertainment.

Meh, I don't buy the "wasn't uncommon" tag here - I'm not saying that I doubt this sort of thing happened from time to time, but I really don't think it's fair to say that it wasn't uncommon. You wouldn't be able to point me to a reference or two for this would you?

yes this in fact is one of my favorite all-time fantasies.......being strung up on diplay for hours/days on end after being whipped and then tortured throughout.....love the erotic spirituality of it all and the being used as a torture toy for the crowd's amusement.

@areallivehuman. The Romans used real nine inch nails. It was supposed to be a painful execution, not SSC play you can walk around from. They didn't nail the hands, since the nails would just slide along the hand bones. Instead they nailed above the wrists, where the bones were stronger. If the nail hit the veins or bones, death might come fast, but otherwise it was positional asphyxiation when the feet stopped lifting the torso enough for the lungs to pump.

Romans are sexy, but not RACK, mimic them, don't copy them.

So if you play safe, you use leather straps rather than rope, due the increased surface area reducing crimping on the nerves.
Make sure there's enough slack in the feet, to lift the torso, so the lungs can inflate. Don't wait for them to safeword, since stretched lungs means a lack of air to complain with.

And going slack into subspace, might cause a fatal lack of breathing.

I once did showtunes from "Jesus Christ Superstar" as part of a scene... Does that count?
