My question now is since when is it legal for the police to remove somebody's private property?

When it's posing a threat to safety and orders to remove it went ignored. Let just one generator spark a tragic fire and watch how many complain about the deaths and blame the city.

its just fucking harassment. those generators are allowed on campgrounds all over the fucking place so the "safety" bullshit is just that. bullshit. but there's some bylaw on the books so away they go. expect a lot more of this shit, there are people in the mayors offices across the world combing through the regulations looking for anything they can use.

don't expect the motherfuckers to play nice, they want you and your protest shut the fuck up, and they will do whatever it takes to get that. if the generator bikes are brought in, don't be surprised if somebody digs up some obscure fucking rule against unlicensed manufacture of electricity or some such shit.

you guys decided to take on the big boys, you'd best be prepared for a real shit kicking before this is all done.

How is a generator of the type that millions are used in campgrounds all over the world more likely to start a fire than a lawn mower or a weedeater?

That is a SERIOUS reach.

Cant you do better than Huffpo

I can but why should I go looking for another article that will tell me the exact same thing.  Bloomberg went after the generators.  My question now is since when is it legal for the police to remove somebody's private property?

Really? Are you really asking that question? There are things that are not allowed, by law in the park. There are fire safety laws. They can go in and confiscate any alcoholic beverages, and they can confiscate those generators. Doesn't matter whether they are using the city's power. You do realize that gas and diesel fuel are combustible right? You do realize those generators throw off heat. And you do realize that they are going to likely overburden those generators with not only computers and light sources but space heaters, creating a clear fire hazard.

I think the solution of the bike powered generators solves that.

Why do they need to be "supervised?" Why does a concert need security? Because there are so many damn people congregated in one place, safety becomes an issue. Think there wasn't security at Woodstock? That was a hell of a lot more peaceful than any of this shit. I'm not far from the city, and I bet if I went there to look, I would find people littering everywhere and causing all kinds of havoc, not simply "peacefully protesting."

How about instead of news articles of pictures from SOMEONE ELSE, you actually GO THERE and then come back and tell us how peaceful and non disruptive the whole thing is? Because unless you are there, you really don't know.

Very simple, there is a person operating a weed whacker and a lawn mower at all times. I have camped since I was 4 years old (so more than 40 years) and I have not seen generators at "every" campground or even a handful. Campgrounds provide electricity and if you are going to use your own generator, you better keep it away from the tent (as the article stated, by 20 feet). There is also a fire safety law that states a grill, charcoal or propane must be ten feet away from the residence (in NJ and FL), most likely everywhere else. Do people observe that safety law? No.

But here, there are massive amounts of people and all it takes is ONE asshole who doesn't know what they are doing with the generator (and I'm willing to bet there aren't a lot of people there who are of the "build stuff" variety), and BOOM! Lots of people burned and/or dead. Now who's fault is that? The city's? Wanna take bets on how fast those people and their families would hire a lawyer to file suit against the city AND the asshole? If you do, bet big, I could use the money.

Liars and Pigs and spontaneously combusting generators, oh my!

I have to say, this is one of the most profoundly moronic posts I have ever read. Seriously, this post has managed to make a Sanity post look, well, sane!

So you don't think a gas-powered generator can cause a fire? Do we need a lesson on combustion and flammable materials?

You tell me to go there and you haven't even gone, yet you know people are littering and causing all kinds of havoc.  I am far from the city--about 15 hours away.  However, I am very active in my local occupation.  And we keep a clean camp.

Seriously, I doubt Bloomberg was really concerned the generators would cause a fire.  If you read the article, you would see the FDNY had inspected them just days ago and no problems were reported.  The thing with the generators is similar to what has been happening in my city.  TPTB think that if they harass us enough and keep changing the rules, we'll just shut up and go away.  But that's not going to happen.  Yeah, some people will head home as the cold sets in, but most of us will at least occupy those public spaces part time in rotating shifts so that nobody is in the cold more than a few hours.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them go back to actually enforcing laws which benefit society, and I'm not even involved in the protests.

it's a novel idea!

to the OP -- i hope the bike generators work for them. i'm sure the NYPD and FDNY don't even realize how transparent they are.

It is a conspiracy.  They want us to go away.  Several occupy groups have gotten legal representation.  Here in Erie, our attorney is arguing that the Constitution trumps local law and that there is nothing in the Constitution that limits the time or manner of free speech. I hear attorneys are using the same argument in other cities.  And tptb are backing down in regards to the "violations" of local ordinances.  Taking away the power for "health" reasons is just a another tactic tptb have thought up to try to get us to go away and shut up.

Sure, I've now been to the Boston and providence sites DOZENS of times, what phony accusation would you like dismissed first?
I'll be happy to answer any question you have about occupy sites. And If I don't know the answer, I can have an answer for you within 24 hours and it will be the truth.
