Firm, what is your opinion on Dr Marc Faber and his views/predictions?

There were several that predicted this housing/bank bubble tho. Peter Shiff is interesting, I like watching him, he likes to discuss/argue with other people/predictors. lol I saw some youtube clips of him visiting OWS.. that was.. well.. [8|]

tj,

I'm not really familiar with him, but googled him after reading your post.

I don't pretend to be an economist, but I don't think that most economics is that difficult in the bird's eye view.  I took some courses in it in my younger days, and have followed it on a very personal level as I founded, grew and/or purchased and sold several businesses over the years.

I didn't keep up with the fact that Glass Steagall had been gutted several years ago, and when 2008 hit, was confused about how we could have gotten into this mess at the time.  I didn't support, or not support TARP at the time.  The bailouts made less sense to me, and I've since come to the conclusion that they - and TARP - have not done much more than delay the inevitable, and ensure that we eventually "pay" even a greater price for our failures.

But since then, I've been trying to catch up.  Which is why I knew about Weidemer.  He and his co-authors have explained things in a way that isn't discordant to me, fit the facts and include reasonable caveats.

Just from my quick reading, Farber appears to be on the same basic track.

I found this quote of his sadly pretty funny:

"The federal government is sending each of us a $600 rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money goes to China. If we spend it on gasoline it goes to the Arabs. If we buy a computer it will go to India. If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. If we purchase a good car it will go to Germany. If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy. The only way to keep that money here at home is to spend it on prostitutes and beer, since these are the only products still produced in US. I've been doing my part."

Im not one to buy into conspiracy cases.... but this has piqued my interest. Anyone know anything about the writer or his "predictions"?

http://www.moneynews.com/StreetTalk/aftershock-financial-wiedemer-economy/2011/08/17/id/407695

It smacks of another conspiracy nut case.... but in light of all the problems with the economy... better to be safe and ask?

Uh......it's an infomercial.

So somehow I can't take it very seriously.

Yeah, that was a sadly funny quote from Faber.

To me its interesting to hear how other people view their personal finanical safety. Since forewarned is forearmed, how do you personally forearm yourself financially? You have a business and other assets as well I would guess, how do you protect them?

ETA: Wow! I just watched the clip Firm posted abt Peter Schiff. If he was as savvy then, what he is saying now is positively scary. Start buying canned goods!!

hlen5, you outta check out your local library to see if they have the book or e-book. I have found the updated e-book at my local library. Just a thought..

Ten to twenty years of depression.

You're putting that in far too optimistic terms.  [;)]

Do you two still live together?

Or is it that you just don't talk to each anymore except on a website?

We are doing several things, but generically, the things that most anyone can do:

Get completely out of debt.

Reduce your required expenses as low as possible.

If you have the funds, invest in self-sufficiency and hedge your money through some investments and/or purchases that will likely not lose value, or will at least retain value: gold and silver are two temporary havens, but there are risks.  There are some recommended stocks and businesses.

We have also been trying to get our kids in positions of protection.  Unfortunately, we have at least one son that is just starting college, so that's kinda hard for him.

Our current business is very low overhead.  We work from home, and as long as we have electricity for the computers and internet, we can accept a much reduced level of activity, as long as our recurring expenses are low.

There's a lot of considerations that anyone needs to take into account, so I can't really give much advice, other than the generic bits above.

Thanks. That is pretty much my take on it all too. I am not much of a gold/silver bug tho.

I feel for kids today, its hard enough for them to get a job let alone a decent good paying job. And with the burdens they face in the future re taxes that have to support the govt, social security, health care, debt, wars, etc etc.. its going to be tough for them. The ones that will do the best are the ones with parents that give them good advice and are able to give them a hand when they need it.

On the self-sufficiency part?  Good heavens NO!.

Although I suspect a fair number of people may end up in similar housing.

We have a small house in Kentucky with a couple of acres, in prime farmland.  Enough to supplement our super-market purchases, and enough room to add solar and a few other "extras" that would make us "virtually" self-sufficient, if it came to that.

I just find it curious.

If I'm living with someone I talk to her in person.

You two talking to each other on a website is a bit bizarre.

Do you have computers in different rooms?

Wouldn't it be easier to just walk to the other room and save yourself the keystrokes?

Care to elaborate??

I would love to live out in the country and able to live off the grid. I love the idea of building an earth-bag home.

We have politely answered this question before, and others - including Rich - have also given you input, but you just seem to ignore it all.  I think you just are attempting to start shit, and think we are "sensitive" about the issue.

By asking the same question, time after time, you come across looking somewhat naive and childish.  We smile when we see you broach the issue.

Do you think we have to justify ourselves to you?  Do you really think you are "hitting a sore point"?  Do you think that we are simply a pair of sock puppets for some kid living in his basement, and you can "out us" and embarrass us?  [:D]

Go fish, rml.

You need to talk to Treasure about earthen homes and such.  She's the competent home builder and construction expert of us two.  She has a lot more experience and family background in the field.

As far a "FEMA" housing, I suspect that if things get as bad, for as long as may be possible, there will be a lot of government subsidized housing and subsistence.

There are loads of alternative house building methods out there right now.  My favorite is cob, but I think using a combination is best.  What I enjoy doing most is finding ways to enjoy our current standard of living, but to provide it through alternative methods and increase efficiency.

I came across a new site the other day but I've not yet had a chance to completely read through it.

Open Source Ecology

How cool is that!

There was already $1.5 billion provided through HUD with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The administration has now asked for an additional $2.4 billion.  The worry is the increasing number of families (as opposed to single people) that are facing homelessness.  I suspect we'll see this a growing area of concern.

She is joining in on the discussion. If she said everything to Firm, no one else would know what she was saying. Do you think if more than one person lives in a house that only one of them should be able to talk on a thread?
