Informal survey. Do you watch corporate media- or get your news elsewhere? If so where?

A buddy in EU texts me- all excited over developments. I then reply with the message in the US. [this week immigration/fence]

I recall when many were going to smash their tvs in the 70s.

Now they are in busses- drs offfices, and we pay cable- watch commericals, and  trance into hynotic soundbites the blah media does us.

Of course these same forces are trying to control the internet.

Any thoughts?

I get my news from www.democracynow.org , corporate free news. I like cspan too

gooddogbenji -> RE: free speech tv viewers? (5/25/2006 4:28:58 PM)

I get my news off of CM.  Amazing how educational it can be to know that someone had issues with their Master sleeping around.

Yours,

I abhor newspapers and local broadcast news.  Mostly I get it off the radio, a mix between the AP feeds the local talkie has on the hour and half hour and the political commentary of either Laura Ingraham or Sean Hannity, with my internet news from Slashdot, foxnews, drudge, and Yahoo Oddly Enough.  Occasionally I'll hit Coast to Coast for the really juicy stuff.  This way I get a fairly broad spectrum (liberal, conservative, populist, libertarian, alarmist on both sides of the fence, interesting and the just plain wacko.)
I prefer internet news, that way I can usually do searches to come up with the perspectives and read the full articles as opposed to the 30-second misquoted sound bytes the media is so fond of shoving down our throats.  This way I can filter it through my own perspective to try to get a glimpse of "the truth," because ALL media is biased whether through story selection, reporter emphasis or editorial fiat.  Anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you something.  I take my news pretty seriously, it's important to stay informed and form your own opinion outside of the punditry and social manipulation.  And with several years of practice, I can usually sniff out the bias/tilt to see the nugget of reality at the core of a story often simply by hearing the source and knowing through experience what way that particular source tilts.
Then I laugh, light up a cigarette, and turn on "Family Guy."  Life is too serious to take seriously.

Julia, you rock!  Thanks. Democracy now is a great newscast.Jeremy Scahill had some great investigative reporting during Katrina- and blackwaters role.  I am so glad there are others that- reach for higher quality of life.

I try to get a variety of sources of news. They all have their bias. Generally, I follow the AP, Reuters and AFP wires, I check Fox News and CNN, and I regularly read a handful of "international" sources like the Guardian and Al-Jazeera. Somewhere in the middle, a decently objective story comes out.

I'm very unsatisfied with what is offered up as the left. Where are the true left sites out there? And I mean left, but not perhaps actually Communist (not that there's anything wrong with that!). Stuff like these sites don't count:

http://www.alternet.org/
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/thenewswire/
http://www.democraticunderground.com/
http://www.airamericaradio.com/

Frankly, I hate the soft reporting on those sites. At some point or other it all devolves down to what some celebrity thinks or what some whacked out supposed expert like Peter Singer (who I think is just a nutter in leftist clothing really) has to say on a subject. I guess I am looking for some relatively non-controversial, non-sensational, non-celebrity treatment of the real issues at stake. There's a troll on alternet that is constantly pointing out the fluff on the site by hammering on the issues of "universal healthcare" and "progressive taxation." But seriously, if important issues like that cannot reach critical mass even among the members of the left or progressives then what chances do those issues have in the larger population? I can't see why there isn't coverage on those issues every day.

Do I ask too much?

ArtCatDom -> RE: free speech tv viewers? (5/25/2006 7:12:42 PM)

Well, honestly most "leftist" sources are as deep in information poverty as the "right wing" sources because they cherry pick to fit their partisan agendas.

Have a go at these:

http://www.projectcensored.org/
http://www.factcheck.org/

For a something more along the lines of what you asked:

I read the local paper.  Above and beyond that, various websites.  Other than that, I learn through debate.

chaingang, I used to post on democraticunderground...lol.. they found my posts too radical, because I was for third party movements and not a democrat (this was during the election cycle when their only campaign slogan was "Anyone but Bush" and mine was "Not Bush or anyone like him"...lol)

I'm a third party kind of voter myself. Even if they don't win, a decent third party showing can heavily influence politics. It's amazing how fast labor unions found political footing when communists and socialists were gaining too much steam. More recently, its amazing how quickly a balanced budget became a priority when Ross Perot snagged a healthy chunk of the vote.

Keep being "radical"!

I like a variety of sources from various media.
Also, the current news is only a fraction of the story. Find out the history and science and such about things in the news.
I like to read facts/opinions from many sides, so I don't just reinforce my preconceptions with reading from sources I agree with.
You must backtrack a lot of " facts " and " statistics " presented, to see how they might have been twisted, cherrypicked and edited, or just plain made up out of thin air.

Thank you!  Finally, someone who can understand my point of view.  If I had a nickel for every time my husband (a Democrat) and I (a third-party voter) had the "A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush" argument, I'd have a large jar full of nickels.  For me, the two party standard doesn't work.  I don't see enough distinct difference between those two parties for either of them to really change anything.  It may be idealistic, but I'll be damned if I settle for the lesser of the evils when there's another valid option.  Besides, if you want radical change, you have to vote for radical change.  Baby steps really just don't work.

Dung.com is what I call it! A Bunch of Sh#$t heads who are sucking on their parents teat for college funds all while screaming "Communism Now!"
Dungers ban any one who doesnt agree with their agenda, and they think that any one who supprts 2nd amendment is a cousing f#&ing redneck racist.
Dungers are the most close minded bigoted idiots to polute the gene pool. With a couple of exceptions.

Whatever hits the wire and makes it onto "myYahoo" and "myMSN" page headlines is adequate for me. I just want the news, not opinions...I have my own opinions...lol.

A 2 party system is terrible. But having only a third is bad too. If the right and left could both broaden into a few distinct parties, then people could have a real free choice of options. In the present condition, a vote for the 3rd party is often just a vote for the party that has kept itself in a tight idealogical block. Even a large number of independants would be great. A congress and senate made up of more independants would shake things up.
People have to start donating a buck and some time to individual candidates, instead of party machines.
There is an ominous trend here in Canada to copy the US political system and machinations.

......BBC.........what happens when a news gathering and broadcast service doesn't have to bother about pissing off advertisers or stock holders.

pahunkboy -> RE: free speech tv viewers? (5/26/2006 5:22:52 PM)

Interesting and encouraging how many in this group=- have tuned out the clearchannel-murdock-hypno machine.
Such forces seek to do to the net what they done to TV.
Telecoms want to toll for high speed. ie control what you see- if you even see it.

contct ur rep here...

As it is- I pay $58 a month for internet. Rendell sold out to telecoms for Philly.

I get alot of My news from the internet  but I mentally filter it... I also get alot from the Public Broadcasting Network here I particularly like that as they give opposing views not just the corporation Dogma... I also like the Public Access Channel here which allows common folks to make tapes  & air them, you would not believe all the shit you can learn from regular people!!!
One of My favorites is  to watch these two guys it's a riot you'd think they were idiots but they're on to things long before many realize it's about to happen!!!

You are a smart man!  A pleasure to learn from you. Im wacthing that link now.

At mimum- 9-11 happened on bushes watch. Not clinton, carter, reagan, bush1, etc..

It pisses me off that I am to be greatfull to bush per him saying no attacks happened after 9-11. Incompetent- inaction- -- when he tries to to credit for security in the US I could scream.

Keep on being you. If the "man" had any idea how many of us think as we do....well- they are racing to control the internet right now.
