trimming the waist? belly dance for sure -- especially if you learn to use your obliques. ^_^ mine are pretty solid, just hidden by fluff. haha
if you do a standing hip-lift, but only on one leg -- that's like a crunch for your obliques, but you're standing up, aaaaand wearing a pretty costume. ^_^

you can use your obliques to drive shimmies, too -- THAT is some serious business.
but you can do a lot of this stuff anywhere; i do it while washing dishes, or driving, or vacuuming, hahaha

OH! aaaand -- chest circles/slides -- hip circles/slides -- a lot of that stuff really uses your obliques which can help define your waist.
with a chest slide, it's a lateral movement, and the oblique on the side opposite of the direction you're sliding is what gives you balance and structure. you'll feel your right side contract when you slide, left, etc etc. hip slides are the same way.

sidewinders are great for this, too, because the move moves in and out of the obliques.

beeeelly daaaaaaance!!!

right now i'm trying to learn flutters -- a really fast vibration of your abdominals. holy spoooots is that a work out....

My next question is...... Can anyone suggest exercises that can trim a waist? I find crunches so boring and I'd like to find exercises that I could actually enjoy in the way that I do for other parts of my body.

Regards, agirl

I don't do crunches but I have discovered that a lot of yoga and most all of pilates, works the core. As does the kettle bell. Also, horse back riding is great for the core.

Lilly and searching,

I think I will look  for a belly dancing class as it sounds fun and will do the trick.  There's classes for just about everything around here but if there isn't one I expect I can find the moves on youtube. I'd prefer a class though.

I like the gym but I also like variety.

( I'd love to see a youtube clip of you dancing Lilly, you're so enthusiastic about it)

Thanks LT. I know they do Pilates and Yoga classes here. ( I've always been CRAP on a horse, I used to ride (read as TRY to) when my daughter had ponies but it just caused a lot of mirth all round...lol)

Mind you, everyone that rode had amazing arses, the type that looked like they could crack a walnut.

It's quite interesting that not a single chap has posted about any bits they're less than happy with.

I think, perhaps, like M, they're either content as they are or if they aren't, they just crack on and sort it out without needing to yak about it....lol.

women tend to be chatters. we gab about any and everything. =p i don't know very many men who have that "you know when something great happens and you just HAVE to tell somebody?" feeling. =p usually when they do, it's really HUUUUUGE news. =p

the only videos i have now are older ones that i don't feel adequately represent me as a dancer anymore. =p
i've thought about just booking a videograher and making some videos of my favorite choreographies and some improv sessions. i need to market myself as a solo performer, anyway...

"Good Mornings"are exercises which help build the lower back (which helps give that nice "shelf butt" look that many fine models have) and the buttocks, but they do not involve squatting. You use a light weight on a barbell that is held behind your back. Basically, you just slip it several inches off your shoulder once you have it up there and then hold it in place. Feet shoulder width or hip width apart, and you slowly bend from the hips , going down (but not so far the weight slips off your back), then slowly come back up again. Like someone bowing a slow good morning.

Of course, the usual thing of laying on your back and doing thrusts and squeezes with both feet on the ground , in many varieties of foot positions, known generally as "buttock tucks" helps, too. Wall sits are lovely.

If you can find it (and if you Google long enough you can find it) there is an old set of exercises by a Japanese man called Makka Ho. There are people who teach classes but I am not sure if what they teach is what is in his book or not, because what is in his book, which are the real Makka Ho exercises, are not the same as what are in the newer books by the same name. If you can find his exercises, there are only about 4 of them, maybe 6. I don't remember for sure, now. They are based on poses that certain monks do, which are also natural poses for children and they can greatly help increase hip flexibility.

From Pilates, there is the basic stance: legs straight, but don't lock the knees, heels together and toes natural (don't let them point out or in or too straight forward. If they do, you are doing it wrong). Turn your thighs slightly outward without moving the rest of you. You'll know if you got it right as it disengages your thigh muscle and gives a serious workout to your pelvic floor and lower buttocks, upper back of inner thigh region.

Callanetics is a wonderful set of exercises for general body toning, which will help your flexibility and, well, you might not get a much bigger butt, but, it is bound to be firmer and rounder. Some libraries have the books, if not the CDs and tapes.

And, of course, there are ballet moves which at least don't involve weights. If you do them in the water, they can be done by persons with arthritis of the hips - some of them, anyway.

Hope you have found something helpful in this message.

Thank you obeyWORKlisten.

Your post was full of things that I know I can do easily and lovely clear explanations.

I appreciate all those suggestions and as I have a barbell and weights here I can do this stuff at home as well as gym. I'd completely forgotten about *good mornings*!

I don't know about anyone else, but talking about all these things has given me a great motivational boost.

Sometimes the wear and tear of life can dull my motivation and energy. The interest and time that people have taken to encourage and suggest has given me a real injection of enthusiasm.

Thank you to everyone that's taken part in this thread with all their tips and expertise.

My next question is...... Can anyone suggest exercises that can trim a waist? I find crunches so boring and I'd like to find exercises that I could actually enjoy in the way that I do for other parts of my body.

Yeah I've always found that men fall into two categories:

1. They don't care what they look like and never even think about it. They throw on a tshirt and a pair of baggy jeans and they're set.

2. They care but don't talk about it because it may make them seem "unmanly" to do so, so they keep it to themselves.

ServeMyMassiveCk -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (11/1/2011 10:31:00 AM)

Women are not 'skeletally different'. The female skeleton is the same as the male skeleton.

Notable differences between male and female body:

Male fat gathers around the midsection (which explains all these dumbasses taking shots at me for having an extra 10 lbs of training weight. Most of them would get their fucking asses kicked which is exactly what needs to happen so you understand exactly how much stronger and more athletic I am than all you little pieces of shit - I'll fuck you all up, morons)

Female fat is more evenly divided around the hips, breasts, etc (meaning that it's easier for a woman to disguise the fact that she has body fat)

The male center of gravity is a straight line through the back

The female center of gravity is lower, just above the knees

Also, the female metabolism and BMR is inherently higher than that of a man which means women really have no excuse for gaining any weight at all, imagine all that lard you must be eating to get that fat you fucking whales, not when us men take control again, we'll make sure you lose the fucking weight OR ELSE

You need another category. For the guys like ns.

You forgot the 'metrosexuals' who obsess over it.

littlewonder -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (11/1/2011 12:21:53 PM)

personally I find metrosexuals very attractive. I like men who take care of themselves in such a manner.

I didn't put them in that category because there are so very few of them unfortunately.

While I appreciate that they take care of themselves, they usually aren't rugged enough for me.

I have the Callanetics stuff and I do really like the book. It does help if you watch the video, the movements are extremely precise, and you have to be in just the right position to get them right. I am also checking out Ballet Beautiful, since my tendency is to really bulk up and I need to build up my flexibility and lengthen my line. I am *sad* at how stiff I have gotten.

I've just looked them up. I like the fact that you can do them in all sorts of positions, and while stuck in traffic etc.

Thanks blacksword:)

hmmm,... i dont think stomach vacuums trimmed my waist but they are the only thing that made my tummy flat.. My waist would only get skinny if i was very skinny (like 115 pounds) and had very low body fat.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (11/1/2011 3:51:07 PM)

are you talking about liposuction? i've thought about it for two little spots -- one i call "the donut" right on the front of my tummy, and another on my right side. they were both there, even at my lowest weight. they're not huge horrible grapefruit-sized offenses, just little variations in chub, that most people don't even notice, but they bother me to no end! haha

no, sweetie, thats not what i meant, no lipo, stomach vacuums are just an exercise. I learned about it when i was a kid, its got a different name in yoga. Basically, its sucking your tummy in and out while holding your breath. There seem to be different variations, some just suck in and hold for 10 secs or so, some others suck in and push out while holding their breath (thats the one i do), and other do some sort of rolling action (I have never done that tho). You can google more to read up on it. You can do them in various positions, standing, bent forward, on all fours, laying down..
