They have Toddler Formula out now. Like infant formula but for children after they are a year old.

It is still a cow's milk product, so it is not for lactose intolorant children.

Does anyone know what the purpose of this is? It is not as though we live in a country where getting clean whole cow milk is a problem.

So what gives?

according to the websites I just read it's supposed to provide needed nutrients for a child who is transitioning from breast milk to whole milk where the milk does not provide all the nutrients needed during that transition, especially for those who do not eat well or don't receive nutritional meals.

I have no idea how true that is.  My daughter always loved veggies and fruits and all that as a toddler so I never had this problem. I do remember though having friends with young ones who would give nutritional supplements like that to their children because their kids refused to eat anything.

I am not likely to use it although perhaps I will compare the nutrition labels at some point.

It seems like a money making ploy to prey on nervous parents.

I think as long as your toddler eats well then there's no need for it. I could see it being useful though if you have an ultra picky kid.

Pediatricians have always held to the belief that most children, left to their own tastes with a parent who likes to cook and explore with food, will get all the nutrition they require.

Just seems a bit expensive

Here is an article about Infant vs Toddler formula

http://www.parents.com/baby/feeding/formula/infant-vs-toddler-formulas/

Here is a more indepth one.

Btw, congrats!

Thanks Tazzy.

I saw the toddler formula when I was buying preemie formula. I do not recall seeing such 4 years ago with Butterhead. I read a bit about it, especially with regards to Australia.

Overall, it just seemed a bit strange to me.

After all, don't they have some juice box milk type product for toddlers for that extra nutrition? The special formula just seemed a bit excessive.

Many seem to be going in that direction... a new nitch market... playing on the fears of parents. Thats not to say some kids wont benefit... but the majority just wont need it.

Looks like a great way to market an old product. Tweak the regular formula a bit and say it is for an older child.

Neither of my kids ever got any sort of special baby food or formula. I cooked.

I agree. That and it preys on the whole, "You must do this to be a good parent." There was a Penn and Teller episode about the multi-billion dollar industry that caters to this thinking.

My first and now this one have gotten formula in their breastmilk for the added calories.

It would seem helpful only for those kids with severe allergies or very strong Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Not needed for healthy kids.

/Just passing through while looking for the cooking with semen thread, as my coworker just sent me a link to a cookbook on the subject./

So if they are getting EFAs in their diet there is no need for toddler formula.

One other consideration is that cow’s milk is not designed for growing baby humans; it is designed for growing baby cows. Obviously human babies have different nutritional needs.

Toddler formulas are especially designed for the nutritional needs of children between the ages of 1 and 2. Perhaps the most significant supplementation they provide is the essential fatty acids DHA and ARA, which are known to help with the development of a child’s brain and eyes.

Back in the day, parents taught children of all ages how to eat. Now, we live in different times and a fast and easy fix is basically what parents are calling parenting. The child turns up that little nose and says their first word typically learned and understood... NO! and mommy and daddy are running for whatever makes the little one happy. Thus, children are not eating what they should.

Perfect environment for some big company to step in and try to parent... all for the price of... $19.95 with a coupon.

Add to that the fact that in much of the world children are breastfed past the age of two (which gives them the missing nutrients that they aren't getting from their food).

Children are often picky eaters because they are allowed to be. Now if there are actual food allergies involved, that is a different story, but even breastmilk will provide the missing nutrients that those foods the child is allergic to would normally give them.

My daughter was a very picky eater (still is frankly) and aside from breast milk and fruit had to be coaxed to eat. By the time she was two she "self fed." A baby book I read at the time by Brazelton suggested this for a picky toddler:

Get a 6 slot muffin pan and every meal fill it with various healthy foods: raisins, applesauce, cheese (she is not a big meat eater), bread, carrot sticks, etc. Let her eat as much as she wants, of whatever she wants.

When I first started this, I was anxious as hell, wondering if I was doing the right thing. Over time I learned the baby expert was right, she did eat a very healthy diet, but it was over the course of a week or two as opposed to every day.

She was weaned from the breast fairly early (around 12 months) and never drank large quantities of (non-breast) milk. Since per her pediatrician she was thriving, I didn't worry about it.

To this day she is a grazer who eats small meals, prefers simple basic foods and uncooked fruits and veggies. She's also in incredibly great shape (not that I am biased).

To be fair in some situations, I recently saw a program about a disorder that some people have and they are hyper sensitive to smells and taste. I can't believe all children are and think that is a parenting issue, but there are some that really do have a medical reason. Not enough to create a need for some of what is going on though.

On the heels of Lockit's post.. which i agree with... what did parents do with children who were intolerant of cow's milk? Coat's milk worked, condensed milk worked for my brother. Soy milk came along, a great gift for my son .. seems the family has a milk intolerance issue.

DHASCO does not make infant formulas more like human milk than "conventional" formula containing alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid, which are precursors to DHA. Formula sold in North America uses lipids from microorganisms grown in bioreactors as sources of DHA.[5][34] No scientific review studies show DHA additives benefit brain development of term infants, as formula makers claim in their advertisements, which has led some public interest groups to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission of the United States, alleging false and misleading advertising.[35]

A study[36] found that preterm infants fed baby formulas fortified with DHASCO provided better developmental outcomes than formulas not containing the supplement.

A study sponsored by March of Dimes and National Institutes of Health suggests that pregnant moms who take DHA supplements during pregnancy give their babies some degree of added protection against getting colds.[37] The babies whose mothers had taken DHA supplements seemed to get over cold symptoms faster when they did get sick.

Premies... I can see... Pregnant women... yes.. unless they are fish loving women. Other than that, there has been shown no benefit from adding DHA to formula.

http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/nutrition/a/dha_ara.htm

Seems the AAP jury is still out on this issue as well. But, I do think this is important...

In fact, a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Association Between Duration of Breastfeeding and Adult Intelligence, showed an over 6 point increase in IQ between babies that breastfed for less than a month and those that breastfed for at least 7-9 months. That is a significant difference. None of the studies on DHA and ARA supplemented foods showed such a large benefit.

Knowing how I was when my kid was a baby... if the AAP didnt endorse it, he wasnt eating it.

GIVING DHA SUPPLEMENTS TO BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS MAY AID BRAIN DEVELOPMENT OF PREEMIES

I see the AAP's endorcement for breat feeding moms of premiees

I learned with my daughter that the worst thing you can do with a toddler is get into a conflict over food. She's the stubborn headstrong type (where did she get that from?); there is no way to make her eat something she doesn't want.

While I am sure there are children with special dietary needs, most do fine if given healthy choices.

I agree! You can't make it a battle. With a couple of mine, there was a time around two when they needed finger foods and to nibble. They just weren't interested in eating. I just made sure they had healthy choices. If anyone ate crap... it was me! I hid that stuff! lol I just didn't introduce sugar and bad stuff and they never knew what they were missing. Well, until much later and they found my stash and I had to finally give up my sweet habits.
