Ummmm ... Besides of course WE aren't calling our declaration as such, those people who held this 'event' in 2009 really have no claim they can lay that even pertains to what WE'RE doing.
But let's explore that for a second. in 2009 a couple of fairly fundamentalist right wing / Quasi-libertarian fusion groups tried to stage major events and ended up not really attracting enough people to pay for the events (liberals were not only not encouraged . And I asked my friend Phil, who's a US Attorney and as I remembered had 'some' interest as a legal scholar and tacit supporter. He told me that he felt that while they had a few things right they were "noninclusive of those who weren't willing to disavow their left of center leanings. They could buy a ticket to the convention, but that's about it. I found that fairly insulting. And I found their throwing around of the phrase 'constitutional convention' patently irresponsible. The last thing you want in this revisionist climate is a real live CC".
The BOTTOM LINE is they are different events in history. And
There are crucial differences in the open air policies of the Occupy movement.For instance... If Ron Paul's people want to come and vend their politics, they can. If the Trotsky crowd want to weave their bullshit they can. But all the while there has a been a very central core message of and I'd love to quote Robert Hunter's finest bit of social engineering here, but it might make light of what I am saying, but essentially, there's a big conversation that must be started and it has to start now before the water is over our heads, and the window closed , possibly forever. Those people who came before? Well they're welcome to come and join the conversation. It's hardly a closed deal. There will very likely be revisions and refinements.
But to infer that we haven't already got the needed legitimacy to carry a grassroots movement of considerable force forward is EVERY BIT as foolhardy as those who think they're inflicting public relations damage by attacking some social networking page 'on behalf of all the little people hurt by our protest'.
That train has left the station. This movement is OUR OWN made out of the thoughts hopes and proposed solutions of those who have participated in it. And unlike the "big tent" of the GOP, we have a lot more room for everybody down in the park. So come on down and join the conversation. Worst thing that can happen is you won't agree and either will add your viewpoint to the model and change what you feel you need to, or you'll walk away. But at least you tried to add your voice. There's a process at the GAs whereby ANYBODY with something to say can make themselves heard. And if it's sound or helpful, it will resonate.
Really, YOU PERSONALLY are invited. it's the most purely American thing I have ever been involved in.
