Thanks for clearing that up, Lilly.  I think you are right.  I have actually talked to lots of American zionists who try to make that same argument.  They always end it with "so, are you going to give your house back to the Indians?".  Well, no, but on the other hand, if I was actively stealing someone's land and bulldozing down their house, I wouldn't expect to be loved for it either.  Zionists just can't seem to figure out why Palestinians just won't accept this as their fate.

Maybe it's because they keep lobbing rockets into Israel... Duh!

He who is without sin may lob the first rocket. (I dont think that rockets are only going east).

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The "so called Palestinian people" (11/1/2011 11:19:12 AM)

maybe they'd stop lobbing rockets if Israel stopped bulldozing their homes?

You would do the same thing, if you were in the same position.

Unless you`re saying you`d give up your land to the 1st guy who built a home on it.

exactly, and the Natives were labeled as savages and terrorists, too, while no fault was applied to the actions that were CAUSING the Native re-action. it's literally like someone hit the history rewind button; it's just happening on the other side of the world. =p

You know rob, I would stop it with the "duh" thing, if I were you.  Coming from you, it sounds all too real.

Israel can expect to continue to have bombs lobbed at them if they continue doing shit like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_demolition_in_the_Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_conflict

People get weird about having their homes bulldozed, even if it is to correct a "zoning violation".

Israel's been under siege since 1967, I don't fucking blame them for retaliating. Fuck the Palestinians.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The "so called Palestinian people" (11/1/2011 12:32:49 PM)

And Israel has been blowing up buildings without regard to who gets hurt since 1947.  Fuck them.

How DOES the King David Hotel bombing fit in with your image of poor, "set upon by every side", Israel, Rob?

A question Firm : A few posts back you suggested that a poster, who is perceived as liberal( though I myself know of a few issues where she is decidedly conservative in my opinion,2nd amendment for example) is trying to prevent the political rise of a candidate that she disagrees with ideologically speaking.
What is wrong with that?
Has than not been done, from the other side of the aisle, where than candidate Obama was concerned?
Pot....kettle...black [8|]

Just to be clear ... she is a statist.  Generally, today, that is the main strut of American liberal ideology.

I am aware that she varies slightly on other aspects of the ideology, but she is a liberal in the most important, current American definition of the term.

And she is decidedly not attempting to oppose him directly on ideological grounds.  She is attempting to besmirch him in any way possible, as a person. "The politics of personal destruction" tag fits quite nicely.

For example, she isn't going after him on ideological grounds in her OP.  She made it plain that she thinks he is just ignorant to use the term "the so-called Palestinian people", as if there was no doubt that there is "Palestinian people" as a separate ethnic or nationalistic group.  Which, as my post shows, is not the case.

She doesn't have to agree with him, just recognize that he position isn't simply based on ignorance.

Firm

If the Brits would have minded their own business, it would have never happened... When was the last time an Islamic terrorist called in a bomb threat BEFORE setting off the bomb?
quote:

Operation Agatha (Saturday, June 29, 1946) sometimes called Black Shabbat or Black Saturday because it began on the Jewish sabbath, was a police and military operation conducted by the British authorities in the British Mandate of Palestine. Soldiers and police searched for arms and made arrests in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv, and Haifa, and in several dozen settlements; the semi-official Jewish Agency was raided. The total number of British security forces involved is variously reported as 10,000, 17,000, and 25,000. About 2,700 individuals were arrested, among them Moshe Sharett. The British objectives included dissuading the Haganah and the Palmach, Lehi (Stern Gang), and the Irgun Tzvai Leumi, from undertaking further attacks against British troops and officials, as well as possibly dissuading a unilateral proclamation of a Jewish state, and bolstering morale.

And if the Israelis had not displaced Palestinians and kicked them off their land (in other words, "minded their own business"), then the Palestinians wouldn't be throwing bombs at them.  See how that works?  Also, I don't know if you read your own post, but the information you posted specifically says that one of the reasons for Operation Agatha was to dissuade further attacks against British troops and officials.  Meaning they were being attacked by zionists.

It must be kind of soul destroying to be an apologist for Israel, Rob.  I think you should read Yellow Wind.
Commissioned by the left-liberal Israeli weekly KOTERET RASHIT to write an account of Arabs living beyond the Green Line--the border between pre-1967 and post-1967 Israel--David Grossman spent seven weeks traveling in the West Bank to interview both Arab and Jewish residents. The product of his investigation, THE YELLOW WIND, appeared in May, 1987, well before the Arab uprising, but it movingly reveals the conditions that were to spark the riots and demonstrations.Grossman is disturbed, and disturbing, as he tells of a man whose house has been destroyed because a son turned terrorist, of a child whose doll is confiscated at the Allenby Bridge even though a soldier carefully disassembled it to check for explosives, of a young man who spends weeks in prison for no reason. However well-intentioned Israel was in 1967, in many ways the lives of the Arabs in the West Bank have not improved. While graphically documenting the price the Arabs pay for Israeli rule, Grossman’s main concern is the cost to Israel, which he regards as nothing less than the loss of the country’s soul. No occupying force can remain moral, and the Arabs are too numerous to be absorbed into the country; if Israel granted them full citizenship, they would control the government in a few decades and so destroy the Jewish character of the country. Grossman therefore urges the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the West Bank and Gaza, lest the fabled yellow wind swirl out of the east to set the land ablaze and destroy the evildoers.

So it's ok for Brits to occupy Israel and Ireland, but not ok for the US to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan? Gotcha...[8|]

mnottertail -> RE: The "so called Palestinian people" (11/1/2011 1:18:40 PM)

Well, now, the Brits haven't occupied Israel whatsoever, but they did Palestine, that was some time ago.

And I think that the United Kingdoms occupation of Ireland is akin in measure and prudence to the US occupation of North Dakota.

You are simply attacking him because you are a liberal, and he's not, therefore any attack that you can use in an attempt to prevent his political rise is fair game to you.

Got it.

No, you never quite get it Firm.

Your support of him is simply because you are a conservative.

Everyone else realizes he is an idiot.

That's the best you can do, Rob?  You aren't even a very good apologist for Israel.  The Brits WEREN'T occupying Israel, since Israel was founded in 1948.  On second thought, don't read Yellow Wind.  Try picking up a history book, instead.
Or, maybe you should go back to just saying "Duh".

That's the way to be reasonable, rational and solve things peacefully.

And are you also an apologist for the Palestinians or is it just not acceptable to have a view that differs with your own? You keep going on about Palestinians being victims as if that is the only cause of conflict but how about their response with more intensive attacks when Israel pulled out of Gaza? Immediately after Israel declared its independence in 1948 no less than five Arab nations declared war on it in an overt effort to destroy it. It is a pan-Arab conflict much more so than a solely Palestinian issue. Prior to 1948, sectarian conflict resulted in intensive violence against Jewish communities in the region since the 1700's, e.g. the small Jewish communities in Hebron were completely destroyed several times.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: The "so called Palestinian people" (11/1/2011 2:48:58 PM)

I am not even close to an apologist for the Palestinians.  Try reading my comments in context.  But to deny they exist (see OP) or to deny they have a right to be pissed off is pretty blind.

Fair enough but I don't see what issues there are in terms of context as your opinions were pretty clear on where you placed blame for this conflict starting. As far as I understand the issue, there is a question in terms of what truly constitutes a Palestinian as Firm pointed out. That is not to be taken as denying the existence of Palestinians as we understand them today but Palestinians were originally anyone who lived in said region, Jew or Arab. For example the Jerusalem Post which started as a pro-Jewish newspaper was originally called the Palestine Post. For one group to co-opt the name exclusively can be problematic as is the rewriting of history where the Jewish past in the region is voided, leading to absudities like Arafat calling Jesus the first Palestinian martyr! I hope space can be found for both peoples to live peacefully but both must be willing to make painful compromises...
