I don't consider myself beautiful but I don't consider myself anywhere near ugly either. I admit I'm vain and insecure about my looks due to a lot of reasons and do everything within my power to make myself look good. I also admit that I have used my looks to acquire things and men. I figure if it works, why not.

I don't think I'm mean or cruel about it though either and I like to think I'm pretty humble. I think just because one may be beautiful it doesn't mean they are stuck-up or use their power in a bad way. Some simply know how to use it to their advantage.

That's a phrase I dislike... "I like to think."  You're not exactly born with predetermined traits, you are perfectly capable of humility or arrogance.  It all comes down to which you feel clicks with you best especially when taking into consideration that every positive has a negative.

So, are you humble?  Probably to a degree.  Everyone is to some point, whether they want to admit it or not.

Are you mean?  Everyone is mean.  Being mean is not a bad thing, it just shows you're more human than robotic.

eehh..I've seen ugly people with the same attitude so to me it has zero to do with their beauty.

Which is why I said in the opening posts that some of them have *none* of those attributes I mentioned. But they seem to think they do, so hence...the attitude.
It's odd...

Have you never met someone who, at first glance, you thought man they are gorgeous, but the more you learned about them, the less gorgeous they got?

Same as meeting someone who, at first you think geez what a plain or ugly person, but, the more you get to know them, the prettier they become.

Maybe its only me, who knows, but I have had that happen to me many times, on both sides of it for that matter.

Yes, it happens all the time to me.

Using FR......

Another thing I found out first hand.

A great deal of the time we see someone that has something we covet......money, beauty, material things.....and we like to project a few or more negative qualities onto that person to validate our own envious dislike.

I am not gorgeous and have never ever seen myself that way. When I was in my early 20's, and working in my former mother-in-law's floral shop, my husband-at-the-time, berated me for being a stuck up snob. I was utterly flabbergasted. It really seriously hurt. The fact was that I was a very shy and insecure person..(yes I know that is hard to imagine based upon my personality here) but my quiet was SEEN as being stuck up rather than the truth.

I can sympathize with you on that LaTigresse especially when I was in my 20's. I used to get told that I was stuck up when in reality I'm simply aloof around people and I used to be extremely shy. I still am to a point but not like I used to be.

I never understood it until a friend of mine pointed it out to me and I was taken aback by it.

And NS, the reason I say "I like to think" is because I really don't know how pretty I am or how humble I am. I can only go by what I think. How others view me may be entirely off-base from how I view me, as has been my experience.

i used to get told i was stuck up, too. when my family moved to the city, we were picked on for being "snobby rich kids" and i was like "WTF?" we were by no means rich or snobby, just quiet and shy. =p we lived in the ghetto like the rest of them, on a street where the murder rate was higher than the average for the whole city. =p

people make all sorts of crazy judgments based on misreadings of other people.

(p.s. i reeeally don't like the city. =p)

FR,   Time for one of my favorite Shakespeare quotes.

Twelfth Night: Act3, Scene 4

Hell, I get shit like that now...........from my own family.

I grew up really really poor. Not dirt floor poor but nearly so. Sometimes growing up like that, especially in a small town, can lead to some serious emotional and mental shit. Some of my siblings still have not surpassed those scars. For whatever reason I was able to and for that, I am very thankful.

Some of my siblings baggage keeps them from achieving things, having things, they want. Things THEY see as 'being somebody'. I've been able to learn to manage my money, to acquire a decent paying job, and have a few things that THEY see as things 'somebody' would have. The down side of that is that their own envy and inability to get past their own baggage causes them to see me in a negative light. They wrongly assume that because I have some nice things, I have changed the core of who I am. They wrongly assume that because I've become a very confident and strong person, that the qualities that have been consistent my whole life, cease to exist. They wrongly assume that, because I chose to avoid some of the activities they enjoy (hanging out in bars, getting drunk every weekend, etc) I think I am 'better than them'.

The reality is quite different than they assume, but their own baggage keeps them from seeing the reality. Until they achieve their own personal successes, whatever that may be, I will to them remain "LeeAnn who forgot where she came from...".

With some people it really is a no-win situation.

I have family that thinks just like that LaT.  I know others, in different familes, who actually believe that getting off welfare and food stamps is being uppity.  Sad.

I know we can not know celebrities true self by what we see, but one who I think is still just a homegirl at heart, and would be fun to hang with is Jennifer Lopez.  She has "it all" in so many ways, but there is still something about her that screams I am just a chick from the ghetto who made it big.  Lets eat ice cream and giggle at each other.

But it worked out for you in the end it looks like so you did something right.  I always saw that phrase as self-doubt which is something everyone should rid themselves of if they ever want to actually get anywhere in life.

you have family like that too huh? Yeah I have sisters who use every single opportunity to make me feel about two inches tall even though they've yet to leave the dirt poor surroundings of where we grew up and they still struggle.

and we were on a roll, there....

it isnt self doubt, usually, NS.. it is accepting that how one VIEWS oneself may NOT be in accordance to how OTHERS view them...

The key word is 'usually.'  Tell me how many times you have heard somebody say, "I like to think that" then followed it up with an "I could" or similar?

When you factor in a family that diminishes your worth, it isn't exactly reaching to think that that person is more at risk for low self-esteem/self-doubt and probably other hindering negative thoughts.

i've met beautiful people who were really nice. i've met smart people, rich people, and talented people, who were really nice. But i'd say it's true on average.

"I like to think that I am not a clueless twat".

nothing in that statement references family, friends, etc.

I'm sorry for you that the family thing seems to be a factor in your reasoning.

Beauty is only skin deep.
I have a niece who is one of the most beautiful women I have ever met, and boy, does she know it.  Despite her beauty, ever single relationship she has ever had, romantic, friendship, family, business, whatever, ends up with the other person involved washing their hands of her.  She more than makes up for her outer beauty by being ugly inside.  It pains me to say it, but it is true.
A few years ago, I tried to develop a closer relationship with her, myself.  My family warned me against it, telling me that she would take advantage of me, and use me.  I didn't believe them.  They were right, I was wrong.  Shit is still shit, even if it is wrapped in a pretty package.
