You do understand what pervasive is, yes? I would certainly hope so. And, obviously, since I am from the south, and were surrounded by people who thought that way all my life... from school mates and teachers to priests and clergymen... to employers and even boyfriends... and yet I do not have that same "mentality"... your attempt at the presumption would be extremely off.

That sounds quite fair, so long as you make two small caveats.  First, I need you to replace all instances of "your/you" with "my/I", and change all instances of "my" to "your".  and then, our friendship can begin.  Also, replace conservatism with liberalism, you know, just to spice things up

Anybody who reads your posts understands what 'pervasive' means. They're used as example of the word in the dictionaries.

Other than that, it's safe to say that your personal experience is different than many others'.

My own personal experience involved many others outside my own family, and what you describe was not generally accepted in our society, the exceptions being considered as just that.

Our experiences were very different, I'm just glad I didn't have yours.

I actually had the experience, when visiting my folks after they moved to Illinois, of hearing a guy laughing it up with his friends at a party where I was running the sound for. He said "yeah, I worked with a n*gger onetime," followed by 'ha ha,' yuk yuk,' etc. Something kept my fist out of his face, don't ask me what it was. This aside from all the fuckwits from north of whatever border that said (I kid you not) "I like when we do a show (an exhibitor function, actually) in the South, I can say the word n*gger and not worry about it."

Even the somewhat bigoted person on our crew did an immediate face-palm on that one. "dude!"

But if you insist that all that is confined to the South, with greatest concentration in SC, ....

You need to get around more, that's all I can say.

Status: offline 		Calmed down from what? I highly doubt being at Appalachian State is the same as living in Cheraw SC. But you go with the belief that it is, ok? Hell, Florence is more of a major city... and has alot of progressive minds... in comparison to Cheraw, Ruby, Bennetsville....

The only people I've seen like that were a few classmates. Only a few. Whatever color.

We're gonna have a Chinese president here soon, if we don't watch out. In the meantime; some 22-24 yr. old 'black guy' in our statistics class asked me to help him out with the statistics functions on his calculator, being as that the professorin (Leherin) announced that she was not responsible for entertaining us in that fashion. Two weeks later some Chinese student made the mistake of asking the Chinese professorin how to use the sigma function, and this fellow ("the black guy") spoke up to interrupt the Chinese teacher who's Chinese English was not up to the task of cussing out this Chinese student as she would have liked, in English. "She told us two weeks ago that she was not going to tell us how to use our calculators," said he. The whole class paid attention when he spoke.

After that, he could see me 'grasping,' at times. With out invitation, he would lean over to me and help explain some of the more wacky details of the subject (statistics), just because of some question I had asked earlier. If we caught each other before class on test day, he would say "you OK with this?" What a lesson, folks. Be an uncle for a day, and you've got a nephew for life (OK, maybe for just a semester, but the story holds).

In any event, he had a perspective and a sense of intuition that you don't often see in people.

Which is why he could never get elected.
