Marine’s injury draws vets to Occupy movement

Spurred by an injury to one of their own, military veterans are mobilizing to increase their presence and profile in the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Wednesday on Wall Street, the New York City chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War and dozens of other uniformed veterans known as “Veterans of the 99%” are expected to mass near Wall Street, where Occupy began Sept. 17.

Although they’ve been participating in Occupy protests throughout the country, vets said their ranks have been swelling since last week, when former Marine and Iraq War vet Scott Olsen sustained a skull fracture when he was hit by a police projectile at an Occupy Oakland protest. Although still hospitalized, Olsen, 24, is expected to make a full recovery.
His injury has definitely galvanized veterans,” said University of Illinois
senior Scott Kimball, 27, who served in Iraq as an Army specialist. He’ll be helping coordinate Wednesday’s New York City event, which begins at 11 a.m. march at Vietnam Veterans Plaza.“We’re getting calls from veterans across the country who are extremely angry and appalled that someone who served two tours in Iraq got injured as a well-behaved protester,” Kimball said. “It’s rallying vets across the country. We’re just seeing the beginning of it.”Interim Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan has said that the events leading up to Olsen’s injury would be investigated.Click Text To Read Whole Article

I saw that and was gonna post about it....

But, of course, the all knowing conservative element insists they wont go. They will vote instead.

I heard Olson has to have a metal plate put into his head.  Is that true?

I had not heard that, but it would be a possibility.

Thanks anyway tazzy.  I have a cold and really don't feel like looking up a bunch of stuff.

Well, this is only the first real injury sustained by a Vet. And I hear there are LOTS that have now shown up in many of the sites. Boston has close to 30 Vets living there now.

Depends on how bad the fracture is as to if he will need one. A two inch fracture is not that small. If its just a clean break, they can try to wire it. If its fractured into small pieces, they will have to remove them.

Yeah, it's a matter of whether stuff could move and re-injure the brain right?
Speaking of which... I better get some sleep before I injure mine...Nite Taz![:D]

nothing about a metal plate, but this article is 4 days old. i can't find anything mentioning one, though. he was awake and able to understand, but unable to talk.

i think it's funny that the interim police chief says "we didn't use flash bombs" when there are videos showing exactly that. people will deny anything, it's hilarious.

FR

I hope some people are realizing just what is going on. We have now a military contingent that is not strictly aligned with the government.

Tell me about these fallen civilisations now. Who is it, fargle who signs ? - "We're in for a hell of a show". People, this is not going to get better because the scumbags are so fucking isolated from the majority of people. It is going to get worse, ALOT worse. And even if they kill all the protesters right now, other people will know. This is the beginning of the demise of the status quo. I don't know how long it will take but I know it has started. And it will be ugly.

I know this because I know the mentality of the people in power and I know they are not going down without a fight. They will use the arsenal of the US against it's own people, of that I have no doubt, the question is whether the military will actually USE those weapons. It depends on the timetable.

You know what would help ? For veterans to talk to current soldiers and tell them just how sweet it is. Yeah, that would help.

The end may take a long time, decades even, but this is certainly the beginning of it.
