Instead of arguing about politics, why not put that energy into something that will really benefit you. Did you know that most of the corn, and soy grown in this countrY is GENETICALLY MODIFIED? Do you have any idea of what that means? They (Monsanto etal) insert the genes of a bacterium into the dna of the corn and soy. There have been no scientifically conducted tests on the effects on human beings. The only tests have been the ones the industry conducted. It's like the tobacco industry saying cigarettes aren't habit forming or cause cancer. How many years did they say that crap. Wake the fuck up!!!

subdude17 -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 8:19:02 AM)

Oh yeah. Obama hired one of Monsanto's executives (ex) to be the food czar. The system is totally corrupt. These people go from government to industry and back and forth.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 8:20:11 AM)

(edit: that should be PLU, not UPC)

if the UPC code on produce starts with an 8, it's a genetically modified food. so just read the UPCs and avoid the ones that start with 8s. buy food from organic or local suppliers if possible. if you have a yard, or space for some rubbermaid containers, you can grow some things yourself, too.

are you concerned with hormones in your meat and dairy?

I have never heard that before. How did you find that (upc starting with an 8) out? I thought the gmo manufacturers were telling us they couldnt label their shite as gmo cuz it would be too difficult to do.

oh.. and OP, i have been a Monsanto/gmo hater for a long time, nice to see people like you finally waking up.. its taken years but better late than not at all.. You do know about the frankenfish salmon too, dont you?

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 8:25:53 AM)

yack, i meant PLU -- it's on that little "dole" or "chiquita" or "whoever" sticker

As reported by Maria Gallagher, in the June 26, 2002 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, by reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides. Here's how it works: For conventionally grown fruit, (grown with chemicals inputs), the PLU code on the sticker consists of four numbers. Organically grown fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 9. Genetically engineered (GM) fruit has a five-numeral PLU prefaced by the number 8. For example, A conventionally grown banana would be:
4011

An organic banana would be:
94011

A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be:
84011
The numeric system was developed by the Produce Electronic Identification Board, an affiliate of the Produce Marketing Association, a Newark, Delaware-based trade group for the produce industry. As of October 2001, the board had assigned more than 1,200 PLUs for individual produce items.

Thanks Lilly, thats really cool to know... I will be checking labels when i go to the store today! [:)]

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 8:30:10 AM)

no problemo :)

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 8:35:31 AM)

Thanks Lilly. Op, you are going to be surprised at all the people who are going to try to tell you that genetic modification has been going on for thousands of years, and that it is no different than selective breeding. The ignorance and the blind trust in companies like Monsanto just astounds me. I am thrilled to hear that their is a way to identify GMO food. Although if it has corn or soybeans in it, you can pretty much bet it is modified.
Support local farmers.

I would hope that you also support stopping burning our crops for fuel.

And paying farmers not to produce?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 9:59:53 AM)

I actually think using GMO corn for methanol is about the only thing it is good for.

Support local farmers.

As for farm subsidies, you are right Tazzy.  Corporate farmers and the ag industry are leeches.  Talk about an entitlement mentality.

Yes, we know. We've discussed Monsanto and GM foods and genetic drift and the disappearence of native Zea Mais cultivars in Mexico, and the loss of Brazilian rain forest to soy cultivation.

Fuckin' college kids. They always think they just learned what nobody else knows.

Yes, we know that, too.

Tell us something useful, like Lilly did about decoding the UPC code.

I'm a poor hippie. I need twice as much free stuff.

I'm going to Whole Foods and have some free samples for lunch. There's room in the car...

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 10:24:54 AM)

The ag industry doesn't just have its hand out for cash, either.  They also have an entitlement attitude towards public grazing land and water.  And yet most of the large scale farmers and ranchers I have met are staunch republicans.  Their abhorrence of government handouts doesn't extend to themselves.

Because they dont see it as a hand out... they see it as their due.

Reminds me of the "Keep your government hands off my Medicare" signs.

DomKen -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 10:56:06 AM)

The UPC code thing is not quite accurate. The producer can label a GMO food as 8xxxx but nothing forces them to do so and most, virtually all, do not.

kalikshama -> RE: Our food supply (11/2/2011 10:58:19 AM)

When I moved, I was really happy to discover a farm stand less than 3 miles away that is open til Dec 24.

Community Supported Agriculture is another option: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/

Whole Foods has been highlighting local produce for years; my local supermarket is starting to do this too.

I reread Animal, Vegetable, Miracle for inspiration every few years.
