the "haute couture" thread reminded me of how much i like head boxes; at least the look of them. =p i've never tired them, but i imagine they're simple to make, so i think that'll be my next kinky project.

i imagine they're pretty great for dehumanizing, and literally putting you in the dark. =p

has anyone tried one? did it have any effect on things for you, or was it just a big heavy chunk of wood on your head? =p

Never tried one, but would love to - I've seen a steel one somewhere before as well.

The closest I've had is a pillowcase over the head, light enough to see the inside of it but unable to see anything beyond save shadows - that was wonderful in building up anticipation and nervousness, wondering what was going to happen next...

I'd imagine it would be similar, though I'd be wary of splinters

A while back there was a thread on them, so for fun i tossed one together out of some poplar wood i had laying around. i never got around to putting a lining in it, so sound just echoed around inside of it. It is an interesting experience. In the summer it is especially nice to use instead of a hood, since it lets some air circulate, and reduces sweating.
In your query of is is just a block of wood,  i think is it far more. it blocks all vision, and sound echoes if you dont put a lining in it. which is the way i prefer it, but would also block all sound if a foam liner was put in it.
There can be easy to make, i think i might have spent 15 bucks for the hardware. and 5 bucks for the wood. i used a 10 inch piano hinge on the back and 2 clasps on the front.
here is the one i made

If you want to tech it up. Any small wireless baby monitor infrared camera (every long play Dom should have one) should be able to keep an eye on the inside, without letting any light in.

I think you should make one of these while youre at it:

DR. BENJAMIN RUSH'S "TRANQUILIZER CHAIR" (1811)

The most complete restraint of a patient's every move ever devised. 2. A board attached to the back of the chair which is made to rise and fall according to the height of the patient. To the end of the board is attached: 3. A wooden box lined with stuffed linen in which the patient's head is held immobile so it cannot move backward or forward, nor incline to either side. 4 and 5. Chest and belly bands, made of flat pieces of strong leather, which confine and limit the body's movement in the chair. 6. Strong leather bands which confine the arms and hands of the patient to the arms of the chair, thereby limiting their movement. 7. Pieces of wood which protrude slightly from the chair to which the patient's feet are confined, so as to prevent their moving in any direction. 8. A stool-pan (half-filled with water) attached so as to be drawn out from behind the chair and emptied and replaced, without removing or disturbing the patient. The chair is fastened to the floor so as to remain stationary. (Three Hundred Years of Psychiatry 1535-1860)
