Oooh, that sounds kink... I've never been with one of those. [:D]

Good, at least you won't come in trying to prove that this thread doesn't exist.

But do you have a nose?

Hey, no fair!

Don't you know that SpanishMatThingy is the only one allowed to ask questions?
That's the way logical arguments work ya know.
The one who wants to win gets to set all the rules in such a way that they still are incapable of winning.

SixMore2Go -> RE: A question game for agnostics. (11/19/2011 12:40:02 AM)

Ah but I'm Irish, when's the last time you heard of an Irishman following the rules?

Well I guess he wants to lose then, seeing that he's unwilling to admit that he has lost...

Wait... I'm confused now...

In the summer of 2002.

But I have to admit... there was sex in it for him...

Well, I don't know how much of an incentive that would be... it would depend on the "rules".

But I can testify to your backrubs.

Well now then, he was no true Irishman.

SpanishMatMaster -> RE: A question game for agnostics. (11/19/2011 2:33:48 AM)

Hello, SixMore. Welcome.

quote:

#1) well, since naught has changed in the last hour or so my answer remains I am an agnostic, because while there is too much beauty in this world to preclude the existence of a God, there is also too much ugliness in it to allow for one. So, I am left to waver back and forth, which has led me to me present state of profound uncertainty.
#2) Having just checked the mirror, I will go with Yes, I do indeed have a nose.

Do you think that your answer to #1 is a rational argument?

Zonie63:

Please try to be brief. Really, I just could not read your last answer completely because of lack of time.

Well, you were asking for an explanation, so I'm trying to give one. It may be long, but how else can I make it clear to you?

quote:

I will just pick up some sentences which make no sense, IMHO.

"Those two possibilities exist, independent of the question of whether or not I, personally, have a nose."

By definition, this is wrong, because if Azonier exists, you have no nose. So, they are not independent.

Why do you say that? If Azonier exists, then everyone's perceptions would be altered, so from all indications, I would still have a nose, according to everyone's perceptions. Merely proving the existence of my nose does not disprove the existence of Azonier, as I would consider the questions to be separate, not connected.

quote:

"I can prove that I have a nose, but I can't prove the existence or non-existence of Azonier. "

This is by pure logic, completely wrong. In the moment that you prove that you have a nose, by pure logic (and you agreed with that) you have proven that Azonier does not exist. By the own definition of Azonier. I am bluffed about how can you deny this.

If these sentences are right, then please explain me how. Please be brief.

If they are wrong, please reformulate your answer.

If I prove that I have a nose, I do so without considering the question of the existence of Azonier. This is because if Azonier exists and he took my nose, I would not know it. So given the parameters of your argument, even if I prove that I have a nose, Azonier could still exist, because I wouldn't know the difference.

Instead of asking me to reformulate my answer, it might be better to reformulate the question. Let's just say that when Azonier takes one's nose, he replaces it with a nose with a red A on it.

So, if I see that my nose has a red A on it, then Azonier exists.
If I see no red A on my nose, then Azonier doesn't exist.

How's that? Would that make it better?

Obviously there is a third being called Prozonier who is in eternal conflict with Azonier and who has made it his mission to return the stolen noses. Just because Zonie has a nose doesn't mean Azonier doesn't exist, it could simply mean that Prozonier has been able to restore it.

This game is fun. For our next one can we do "Using the rules of English grammar, construct a waterproof submarine" or something equally amusing?

Do you think that your answer to #1 is a rational argument?
You asked me why I was, you did not say a thing about me reason needing to be rational. Nor is it an argument that I am making, it is simply what has led me to where I am at present, regarding the question of God being or not being.

The beauty and complexity and elegance of creation and the universe speaks to me of an intelligence behind it all, yet the ugliness and destructiveness of that same creation speaks to me of the opposite, that surely anything intelligent enough to have designed such a universe would have done so without all the suffering and waste.

Now, are we done, have I lost before I've begun? Or do we now proceed to removing me nose?
