In the rush to develop gen 5 air superiority fighters, problems have arisen. The F22 Raptor was the first gen 5 fighter deployed by the US and it has been plagued with problems that should have been found during the test phase of development. They have been grounded due to ejection seat problems and oxygen system problems. Of course, in 2009, the program was terminated, so no new F22's will be built. It was more expensive per copy than the JSF is expected to be. Of course, the JSF has been plagued with problems, according to the GAO. quote: Defense Contract Management Agency officials noted difficulties in manufacturing outer mold lines, resulting from tight tolerance specifications and multiple manufacturing methodologies among the different JSF parts suppliers. The manufacturing processes are new and different from legacy practices. Inability to meet the outer mold line requirements could have major impacts on cost as well as stealth requirements and capabilities. This problem is not expected to be resolved until the June 2015 time frame after which a large number of aircraft will have been built and would need to be retrofitted for any design changes. Program officials stated some redesign activities have begun and will take into the 2013 timeframe to begin developing the changes, their costs, and implementation. However, I feel the program needs more testing and fine tuning. And yes, it was the Obama administration Defense Department that recommended the cancellation. Second, given the GAO report, it seems that not all the bugs have been worked out of the JSF, another aircraft I feel needs to be in production, but it needs to be up to spec. The question is, has the Defense Department rushed these programs and put them into production before they were ready? I have said before that defense spending could be cut by a third, and we would still be spending almost three times as much as any other country. It seems that there is a lot of waste to be cut, since it costs the government money to fix problems that have come up.

It's an entire culture similar to most of the of the investment 'industry.' Over $350 billion in cost overruns just during Bush's 8 years. The feeding of the pentagon has been a very bipartisan feast.

It was cut in the Bush 43 administration, Jeff, at 183. It's in a Congressional Research Service document: "The George W. Bush Administration wanted to end procurement of F-22s at 183 aircraft, and consequently did not request any advance procurement funding in FY2009 for F-22s to be procured in FY2010."

The problem is that there are other 5th gen fighters that are in development around the world, most notably in Russia. At least one is a forward swept wing fighter with thrust vectoring like the F22, which would be more than a match for the F35. In other words, cancelling the project was not the wisest thing to do, since the Russian government will sell military hardware to anyone with a buck, and they tend to sell current systems, not outdated ones.

But jlf, it's YOUR government. They would never sell you out ! They just decided that we no longer need air superiority. After all, they know best. Things couldn't be better. And if there's something wrong it's just one guy. There are no people talking to each other figuring out how to get richer. That would be a,,,,,a ,,,,, a,,a,a, consp, consp, con, conspiracy. No, NO WAY WOULD THEY DO THAT. Now I know why people who lived by the sword died by the sword. They didn't keep it sharpened up ! T^T

Today all a fighter plane is is a flying launch platform for a really smart missile, while justifying a seat for some rich man's son, kinda the flying version of a knight in armor. Most the newer one require a computer just to stay in the air. Those drones you see the USAsians using are the place the real air superiority weapons are going. No man can live, let alone fight in the G forces a robot can, and if a drone gets shot down, oh well. No need to worry about ejection seats, captured pilots, or life support for the crew either.

No, herocrafts ? Yeah I like the distinguished military service of our esteemed electeds. Pilot. How about we get a President who was in the fucking infantry ? Mabye he might think twice before starting useless shit. But now we have struck oil. No shit, a pretty substantial find in the Dakotas from what I hear. Now do we get cheap gas or do we get the ability to make more war ? How now to spend this black gold. We know they'll make the wrong choice. T^T
