In 1995, my mother was dying of a brain tumor... and We, my brother and I brought her north from florida to DC. And I left my job at MS to spend what looked like her last month or two in her presence. A dear friend of mine was very close to the Gores and when she announced "I want to go" one evening after my brother mentioned at dinner that he was on the Veep's detail for the Grateful Dead show at RFK the following week. We took her to the concert and despite the loud music and all the kids (which she said "felt exhilarating" ), she had a wonderful time. Mind you, this woman had crushes on Robert Goulet and Tony Bennet and Sinatra. She got to meet several politicians she admired including the Veep and Pat Leahy. And despite their being 80,000 people, most of whom were higher than a republican supporting romney, she encountered no shoving, no tight squeezes, and no incidents what-so-ever. And we used no special tricks or connections to get in or out, except that we left a little early (Brokedown Palace encore, the equivalent of a Dave Mathews "watchtower' encore) and we were befriended by this kindly old gent who showed us an easy exit to the parking lot as a courtesy. Mom arrived home unbruised and I had the gift of knowing my mother finally understood my misspent youth.
