Delilya -> USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/7/2011 1:07:32 PM)

I live in a concrete building, that is right outside a military base. This causes a lot of problems for picking up signal on phone and laptop. I loose connection all the time. Someone suggested getting an inexpensive USB antenna for the laptop to help increase my chances. I want the antenna instead of router so that I can take it outside to the little park next door with me also.

Anyone have any experience or advice on if this would help? Appreciate it

Thank you. I will check it out.

I'm just wondering that because you live so close to a military base if you will have better reception or not. I'm thinking that there are wifi security issues at hand that may play a part in your service not being so great.

It can't hurt to try though. I don't know if you have an iphone or something similar but if you do, do you have problems connecting on that as well or find reception to be poor in your home?

I don't have internet on my phone but my daughter does. She has trouble connecting when here also. I have to walk outside to use my phone...lol.

Yeah, I guess they are under $20 and goodness knows I've spent more on something things I ended up not liking. Guess I'll bite the bullet and try.

Thanks

That's what I was afraid of. My sister and brother both live near a base and both have the same problems. I'm pretty sure it's due to the way security is set up. Good luck though. Let us know how it works for you. I'm curious to know if it's better for you. I could let my sister and brother know then.

Haha, sure will LW. Yes, I believe that is a good part of the problem. These apartments are only separated by a fence from the base. Drives me nuts because it goes down all the time. Not as bad outside but still....

I use a TP-LINK TL-WN722N High-Gain antenna that cost me about £10. This doubles the signal strength I get from the pub opposite my house, which has a freebie wireless service. (It's great as a back-up should my own connection go down.) But you can get much more powerful high-gain antennae than that - wall mounted things that will pick up signals from miles away. Just don't mount a machine gun on your window as well, though. Those military types can get unaccountably jumpy about that sort of thing.

Google 'high gain usb antenna' - that's how I'd start.

1>  There is no such thing as a USB antenna for wireless.. .it is a usb wifi card.  You would be adding an external wifi care and would have to install software to drive it and disable your internal wifi card.  You can put it closer to a window if it has a long enough cord.

2>  To install an external wifi antenna on a laptop you have to buy a laptop wifi card adapter, drill a hole in the case to mount it, and attach the external anttenna adapter.  Then, you HAVE to have an antenna attached to the external connection to get wifi.  This works but is a pain.

3>  Omnidirectional wifi antennas go for around $40 and directional ones up to $150... unless you go to Cisco then they charge $400 for a cantenna you can build from a pringles can.

.... now, since you have mentioned phone and laptop in the same sentence... does your laptop get on the net via a cellular connection?  If so, getting a cell repeater and installing one antenna outside might be the way to go.

802.11 networking and cellular packet internet (3G, 4G, and CDMA like Verizon) are completely different animals

I have TP-LINK TD-W8101G,
some day i woke up & it did not worked anymore since, 6 monthes ago,

some of my friends told me you dont buy a G one you buy a N one, however I hade new Linksys Black N something from Kewit, works fine within 30-50 meters,

littlewonder: some police & military divisions use the radio " till now" & the wifi interferes with the waves of the old radio, "I think" or they use some High-frequency radio sometimes, when that bad boy turn on, bye bye wifi [:D]
hell here you can not even get a cell coverge near things like that.....

PS: the wifi, is just waves & some metals interferes with it & even cut it, (some of guys i know when the close the shop "with steel cover to the front door" it really cut the singal from 100% to 0%), glass dose not, I dont know about wood, [8|]

Merc, I'm looking at it now. It isn't a ghost, you know!

If it helps, it's actually a wireless adaptor and high-gain aerial combined.

Peon, is this the right thing?

Thanks everyone for your input

PeonForHer -> RE: USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/8/2011 3:44:00 AM)

It's not the model I use, obviously, but that's the sort of thing, yes. Have you read the reviews? Some people are iffy about it because of its cumbersome size and shape.

Delilya -> RE: USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/8/2011 5:19:02 AM)

I haven't read the reviews yet. I wanted to make sure that was the type of thing I was looking for. It was the wee hours and I figure this morning I can shop around and see what's available. Thanks a million for the help.

PeonForHer -> RE: USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/8/2011 5:25:53 AM)

You're welcome.

Delilya -> RE: USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/16/2011 8:36:35 PM)

Today I purchased from HHGregg a Linksys, by Cisco, wireless network usb adapter. It cost $20. Installed it and here I am, indoors and online for the first time in ages. My videos are no longer buffering for minutes on end and my pages are loading quickly. Time will tell but so far, so good!

ashjor911 -> RE: USB WiFi antenna advice needed (11/17/2011 5:15:41 AM)

nice,
congrats

I just saw that My SMC have a (build in anttena) that can not be removed or replaced
