The U.S. Attorney`s Office claims in a federal lawsuit it filed today that a Penn Hills abortion protester on Jan. 15 deliberately shoved two volunteers who were escorting a woman and her friend as they entered the Planned Parenthood clinic on Liberty Avenue.

The government claims that Meredith Parente, 55, violated the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, and it is seeking $5,000 in compensatory damages for the two volunteers and $15,000 as a civil penalty.

Pittsburgh`s code requires protesters to stay 15 feet from entrances to clinics that provide abortions. The federal government is seeking an order that would require Parente and anyone protesting with her to stay and additional 25 feet from the entrances.

Parente declined comment.

My daughter once had an encounter with an anti-choice (I refuse to label them "pro-life") protestor at a medical clinic in Brookline, MA some years ago.

She was going for her annual physical and a female anti-choice protestor jumped in front of her yelling, "Don't kill your baby!" (which was funny because my daughter was not pregnant nor did she look pregnant). When my daughter tried to step around her, the anti-choice protestor grabbed her arm. Little did she realize that she had just grabbed someone who was a 6th degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate. My daughter hit her once, shattering the woman's nose. The two cops present immediately developed blindness and claimed they didn't see anything and suggested that the anti-choice protestor probably tripped and broke her nose hitting the sidewalk. When my daughter came out after her appointment, the various anti-choice protestors backed away from her in silence, obviously afraid they'd get the same treatment.

I'm very proud of her and very proud of how she handled herself that day.

I thought the Constitution guarantees the right to protest…any damn time or place you please…what’s with this 15 foot rule…by they way I want to see the video…The Constitution trumps any local or federal laws.

I read some wild un-substantiated bullshit made up sources that said the escorts played like they were pushed when the feds were watching. The protester said he was just politely offering financial assistance to the mother if she wanted when the escort feel to the ground screaming.

Yes, the Constitution does trump local laws and ordinances.  However, your right to protest outside abortion clinics does not trump my right to enter said abortion clinic unmolested by you and your fellow protesters.

your point is way off base, butch.

I never gav an opinion on the piece, allowing others to draw their own conclusions. your snark went way off its mark. There are reasons abortion clinics have escorts. you should know that if you are pro-choice. If the assertions in the suit are true, then the protester clearly crossed the lines designed to not only protect the people using the clinic, but those protesting as well.

What part of the constitution are you referring to, butch?  There is no "right" to protest.  There is a right to peaceful assembly and a right to freedom of speech.  Did I miss the Right to Protest clause?  In any case, obstructing people from entering a medical clinic, and causing them emotion distress is not peaceful.  Looks like these anti choice protesters need to take lessons from the Westboro Baptist Church.  They, at least, are smart enough to keep their distance from whatever it is they are protesting.

Semi, not to nitpick...but this Westboro Baptist Church folks aren't all that smart....what they are,in most cases,is enjoined to maintain a minimum distance from the various funerals they are disrup....er protesting at.

OMG, no WAY am I an apologist for WBC.  I was merely trying to make the point, badly apparently, that the WBC's legal success has been because they don't cross the line into physically assaulting people, or obstructing them, as abortion protestors have been known to do.  The WBC seems to know exactly where to draw the line.  They also seem to follow local regulations regarding such activities, like distances from schools they are protesting.  The abortion protester in this case and elsewhere can't seem to figure that out:

We can't equate words with violence: Alito's "surprisingly touchy-feely" citation goes too far, says Tim Cavanaugh at Reason. Being attacked by nasty words is not the same as a physical attack — you can ignore one, but not the other. And, as Alito's colleague Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, Westboro's protests did not single out Snyder's family but were "general in nature." Calling it a personal assault "seems like a stretch to me."

You can enter...but you can't leave... at least without fighting your way through the protesters... Don't fall now... Oh I forgot it would happen even if the protesters were not there.

Yes.  They are.  And they stay exactly that distance away.  They definitely know a thing or two about the legalities of freedom of speech.  That's why they won at the Supreme Court.

To be sure...also just so there is no confusion at all, never thought you were acting as an apologist for WBC( can't speak for Termy...he is a little whacky....lol).The level of insanity needed to come down on their side is rarely seen here...even from some of our more far out posters....lol.

You're mistaken. There is a right to assemble and a right to petition the government. Nothing about assaulting private citizens entering a business.

"OMG, no WAY am I an apologist for WBC. "

I didn't say that. But it was not negative and it was not neutral. They are quite adept at staying out of the hooskow.

"abortion protestors have been known to do"

I hear tell they done kilt some doctors. For some dumbass reason killing them once they are growed ain't an abortion. An abortion is a killin but a killin ain't a killin. See how that works ? Course these folk ain't as smart as Ernest Angly, Creflo A. Dollar, Jim and Tammy Baker or that guy* who kept fessing up for cavorting with Women of the night, what was his name ? The WBC is also smart enough not to claim their air conditioned dog house as a tax deduction. (*just thunk of it - Jerry Falwell) Anti-chopice people have their own rating.

Let's clarify :

[wiki]
""Moron" was coined in 1910 by psychologist Henry H. Goddard[3] from the Ancient Greek word μωρός (moros), which meant "dull"[4] (as opposed to oxy, which meant "sharp"), and used to describe a person with a mental age in adulthood of between 8 and 12 on the Binet scale.[5] It was once applied to people with an IQ of 51-70, being superior in one degree to "imbecile" (IQ of 26-50) and superior in two degrees to "idiot" (IQ of 0-25). The word moron, along with others including, "idiotic," "imbecilic," "stupid," and "feeble-minded," was formerly considered a valid descriptor in the psychological community, but it is now deprecated in use by psychologists.[6]""

So technically morons are smarter than imbeciles and imbeciles are smarter than idiots. The only question is where these peole fit in.

I say we test them. Take every anti-choicer out there, take EVERYTHING they own and put it into a general fund. Then house all the expectant "mothers" who want an abortion and force them to have the babies. The anti-choicers will be indentured servants caring for these Women during their pregnancy and delivery, and will then raise all the children they "saved". They will be serving their "god" so we have no moral issues with enslaving them. They asked for it. Safe, sane and consentual.

If they try to escape we cut their pinky finger off and second time it's a foot. Run now :-)

You wanna impress your morality on me motherfucker you are paying for it.

It's Kenpo, not kempo, and yes, the knowledge can come in handy. My time with it can only be described as brutal. We ran gauntlets, warm-ups weren't allowed - after all, how many muggers give you time to stretch? - time on the bag was spent with people positioned on either side throwing punches as you threw them. Tends to teach one to get back on defense fairly quick.

Couple of things I don't like about your story. First cops didn't need to turn a blind eye. Woman assaulted your daughter. She should have been arrested. Then again, your daughter's response doesn't fit reasonable and necessary. There's a military term for that, which tends to get left wingers all up in a huffing and indignant outrage if the soldier folk do it. Second, anyone trained to that degree didn't need to shatter anyone's nose. She could have negated the threat in much simpler ways that also would have provided the lesson she wanted to teach. Note the take down of an armed gunman by a couple of MMA folks a few days ago.

But, it's your story. Shrug.

How is this 15 foot law different than the city of St Louis setting hours for a municipal park being used as a protest place?
