outlier -> An memorable encounter for a woman her "first time" (11/7/2011 7:48:26 PM)

A woman in the water off Santa Cruz in Calif.
was paddling out into deep water her for the first time.
She had an interesting close encounter caught
by a camera.

Here is what the camera caught (40 sec).

Here is the explanation of the behavior

I’ll bet she would remember it, even without the recording.

Holy shit!!!

that's awesome ^_^ there was a picture of a man who had a similar experience while kayaking recently, too. ^_^

humpbacks are snazzy ^_^

I agree I thought it was awesome!  Can you imagine what it must have been like for her?!
Paddling along and suddenly 2 whales, mouth agape, pop up to the height of a 2 story building,
right next to her.  And then one falls off towards her.  WOW!  Glad you thought so too.

I don't think it would have been "holy" but that is exactly what I might have done
if I had been her.

You know how people say "Pictures or it never happened"?  Well she has the video,
and I am sure will be telling the story for a long time.

So: sea-gulls above, means herring and humpbacks below. I got it. [8D]

i bet it was flipping terrifying at the time. =p humans tend to think of the ocean as a surface we interact with, not necessarily something that has things in it bigger than buses. =p
that's like the floor in your house falling out!

but afterwards, i'm sure it was one of those "omigoshihavetotelleveryoneiknoooooww!!!" moments. =p

To quote Sherrif Brodie. I think we need a bigger boat.

GreedyTop -> RE: An memorable encounter for a woman her "first time" (11/9/2011 11:57:06 AM)

while I agree it was awesome, I have to wonder WTF she was doing that far out on a surfboard?

A brown string moment if ever there was one.

Yes, the pattern the whales generate when "bubble netting" can be seen from the air.
This is a photo of it taken from a plane.  I found it on Wikipedia

Lilly, You are a very witty woman.  A great double in this post.

Using "flipping terrifying" to describe a whale scare.  Nicely done

And this is a perfect description of a young girls reaction.
Two very nice turns of phrase.

It positively fascinates me that there is a fish that huge in the world!

Thanks for sharing, outlier! Really, really interesting! <smiles>

Wow that's pretty stunning video!

It reminds me...humpback whale season is upon us (here in Hawai`i) soon. I know some whales can be seen as early as October, but it's usually the early part of next year when it becomes "whale soup"...although I think that's more for Maui than any of the other islands. ;) They are awesome to watch!

I dont buy it. The water off the coast of California is cold. Northern CA is really cold. I dive in that water and won't go in without my drysuit. I cant imagine surfing without some sort of wetsuit.

Well, here is the woman and the news station you want to argue with.

An Interview with the woman who posted the video and claims to
have shot it.  It is on KSBW Channel 8 ActionNews website.
It has more video that she shot of the whales that day too.

soul2share -> RE: An memorable encounter for a woman her "first time" (11/10/2011 10:33:42 PM)

I've swam in the Pacific in Monterey and Carmel, CA....and the water at the surface is usually warmer than the water below. I don't recall the water being all that cold. But I saw the video tha other day, and it looked pretty authentic to me. I don't reacll how far north that it happened, just that it was CA.

Check that, I just saw it was in Santa Cruz....that's not too far north of Monterey, swam there too. I don't know, maybe since I grew up up north, I'm used to colder water when swimming.

And for the record, I jumped in my chair when those whales popped out of the water.....to be NEXT to them when it happened...yeah, that is a true HOLY SHIT moment! [;)]
