Can you remember the exact moment we learned that the asteroid was going to strike the Earth today and destroy all humanity, but the government decided just to tell the stupid people that it would pass harmlessly by the Moon tonight so they would not panic?

QUESTION: If it was your decision, and you knew definitively that all life would end on a certain date, (and could PROVE it), would you have the information released to the general public knowing there was nothing we could do, or just let them live blissfully? Do you think your government agrees with you?

do you think the asteroid coming by today is going to hit the earth?

it wasn't really kept secret i don't think, it just wasn't front page news.

if i knew that the world was going to end, i would tell people. there'd be chaos, i'm sure, but people would at least have the knowledge and opportunity to say goodbye to those they love. i'd rather allow that, than have it take people by surprise and avoid chaos.

It wasn't a secret.  You can get a list all tracked object from multiple sources.  As far as keeping it secret if I were in charge, I can't see any way to keep it a secret.  If anything in the scientific world is known then it's known by a lot (somewhere between 100s and thousands) of people.  There wouldn't be any way to make all of them silent on the matter without killing all of them.  Someone would find it necessary to get the message out.  Secrets are like that -- you have to make a lot of people agree to keep the secret and all it takes is one to disclose it.

Yea, so I would like an actual read on the whole "Die today" question as I have a shit-ton of work here and I would rather take the day off than end up at "There, done! WHEW that was quite the hard job!" - SPLAT

...ya'know?

There are Way too many amateur astronomers out there who can not only spot the thing but calculate its orbit.

Sorry but it isn't going to hit or a few thousand of them would be telling us about it.

This thing is not even close to earth. Some estimates put it 200,000 miles away. It's something stupid to worry about..

Well, no, because it is not going to hit the Earth.

And I recall reading something about it awhile back.

Frankly I find solar flares more interesting.

Is it me, or is the OP written in a surreal way? I mean, WTF? What moment are we supposed to remember? What are we supposed to have learned? Who ever said anything about the asteroid striking Earth? If this is some kind of figure of speech that I never came across in my decades of reading and speaking English, if this is some kind of poetic way of making a point by being absolutely nonsensical about it, if there is something that I have completely missed, someone please fill me in!

Oh, and, on the subject: there are some people who think that all information gained by any human endeavor has to first somehow pass through a government before it is disseminated to the world. (And how strange, no matter where in the world this human endeavor may be taking place, it is always their own government that the information must pass through.) I pitty these people, because their notion of how the world works must be very frightful. Living their day to day lives must be hell.
