Aylee -> China and extortion (11/10/2011 7:27:13 AM)

I found this interesting:

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/china-threatens-massive-venting-of-super-greenhouse-gases-in-attempt-to-extort-billions-as-unfccc-meeting-approaches-2011-11-08

quote:

In the run-up to the international climate negotiations in Durban later this month, China has responded to efforts to ban the trading of widely discredited HFC-23 offsets by threatening to release huge amounts of the potent industrial chemical into the atmosphere unless other nations pay what amounts to a climate ransom.

Dane-geld is always a bad idea.

Hillwilliam -> RE: China and extortion (11/10/2011 7:29:38 AM)

But, havent you heard? There is no such thing as greenhouse gases and Anthropogenic global warming is a hoax so the Chinese can't do anything to hurt us.

I was going for the extortion angle, not the debate about climate change.

Personally I would say, "Then vent it ASSHOLES!" rather than pay the Dane. The article points out that they are already venting a bunch.

This just is one more reason why China's policies suck.

Besides. . . isn't it the "man-made" part of the global warming that is at issue? Although, you might find this interesting, I am thinking of ordering it: http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2011/11/01/what-was-life-like-in-the-little-ice-age/

Does this differ in some significant way from the u.s. embargo of cuba...Let us appoint your government or we will try to starve you to death.

I do not normally answer you, but this time I will.

Yes this very much differs. This story is about carbon-offset payments from the UN that are about to stop. It has nothing to do with an embargo.

I too was going for the extortion angle...
My question stands...how do the two extortion attempts differ?

Moonhead -> RE: China and extortion (11/10/2011 12:10:32 PM)

Mostly in that China's in a superior position and Cuba's in an inferior one.

erieangel -> RE: China and extortion (11/10/2011 5:55:59 PM)

Only because of size, population and the fact that Cuba had been getting receiving aid from the Soviets, the US avowed enemy for 40  years.

Termyn8or -> RE: China and extortion (11/10/2011 10:14:01 PM)

FR

STOOPID MOTHERFUCKERS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Cuba, Venezuela and more tha half of South America is the thrid wave of the cold war that Russia is going to play on us. Don't you see that ? South America has oil, but see so does Russia so their timetable isn't quite the same as "ours". It's not just Castro, the Cuban people fucking hate us. Ain't you got that throught your head ? You think the Iraqi people wanted us to come ? Fuck no, they don't want us there now. Neither did Rhodesia, Rwanda, fucking nobody. We come in with force. They cannot resist. With any country can we gang up on it, like the UN wanting Iran not to have nukes. If I were the President of Iran the first and foremost on my todo list would be to get nukes, BIG ONES.

Not everyone sees this world through an Amerocentric eye. Even some of us.

seems you missed the punch line

the UN-backed carbon trading scheme

Termyn8or -> RE: China and extortion (11/11/2011 12:04:31 AM)

Actually RealO if you think about it, carbon credits is the epitome of their scam.

It is a way to actually sell air !

Your thread would get a lot more traction among the leftists here if it were an eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil American employer doing something like this.

You do know tthat the titanium used in all jet aircraft in the u.s. military comes from russia?
You do know that all of the rock drilling bits that the russians use to drill for oil and water come from the u.s.?
So much for "avowed enemies".

Edwynn -> RE: China and extortion (11/11/2011 9:48:02 AM)

Khrushchev didn't even know where Cuba was until after the revolution. The revolutionaries did it all on their own.

After a multitude of subsequent antagonistic moves by the US ... well hello Russia.

Almost like it was intentional or something, but let's not go there. The ideological stuff is easier for people to understand.
