I am sort of the opposite of you in that I tend to have a very high pain threshold for thud-style pain and much less for stinging pain. I would agree with most of the other posters that breathing and focus are the keys to pain tolerance for me when it comes to stinging types of pain (those little mini-floggers aimed at my nuts fucking kill me and will tame me in about a second if I can't avoid them). The only thing you can really do is through experience come to understand the pain will go away in a few seconds and begin to focus and go off into whatever form of space you go off into and remember that you are dealing with the pain in large part to please somoene else. When it comes to thud pain (I would call serious ass paddling and certain forms of flogging a cross between thud pain and stinging pain) I think you can actually physically work to build up tolerance. I think lifting weights and building muscle and/or taking certain forms of martial arts that involve striking will build up your tolerance for strikes to any non-vulnerable part of your body. I have had a 5'10" #160-170 women trained in martial arts stand over me and strike me full-force in the solar plexis (Sp?) multiple times while I was lying flat on my back on a hard floor restrained. It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't unbearable either - primarily because I am big, lift weights and have some experience being struck in martial arts so it is not a complete system shock. Similarly, I have a women friend who is fit and athletic who sometimes likes to punch me as hard as she can repeatedly in the upper arm while we are at the bar mostly because she is amused I essentailly can not feel it at all, even more so with a couple of beers in me. I have been hit with wooden objects, fists, knees, kicks and other hard objects repeatedly in scenes generally with very few marks left and cerainly no damage other than an occasional bruise or sore rib. I can't attribute it to anything other than being a big weightlifter who has some experience receiving strikes in martial arts. So yes, I do think one can build up their physical capaicty for tolerating thud-style pain and I don't think you have to workout like nuts to increase your tolerance. Also, I do believe getting tattoos can help with building tolerance for some types of stinging pain (not the mini flogger on the nuts stuff unless you get your balls tattooed). Maybe a little over the top for some people, but...
