@hausboy -- thaaaaanks very much ^_^
When you say you earned your boots, is that a Leather thing?
I only really want to learn to do it as just a new skill, and do it for friends if they need it. I really enjoy meticulous, detail-oriented stuff, too. =p
Thanks for the tip on the colors, too -- I'm guessing it makes the color richer? Not so flat like just straight black would do?

Yes on the "earned" thing.  It's an old tradition. (not a requirement!)
That's my thing too....I love doing my own boots...and the boots of those I serve...I'm not bootblack material. I just can't sit and do strangers' boots for hours on end.
the colors: they do make the black "richer" and it also give it better shine/better gloss.  Learned that from the bootblack at the Colonial Kink conference last year.

Parade Gloss is controversial.  I don't know a single bootblack who uses it, or will suggest using it.  I was sworn off parade gloss not just by the bootblacks, but I heard the same orders from the cops, fire and military folks in my circles.  I've heard it can build up a wax and needs to be stripped off...others claim it's "cheating"....and I've heard that repeated use can damage/crack the leather.

So for me...I won't touch the stuff.  Check out some of the military website forums--they talk a lot about using (or not using) parade gloss.

Yeah I posted a link to one I found where a guy mentioned that he did use it, but that he also stripped his boots twice a month. Do you think that would have an effect?

I will probably avoid it, especially since it's one more thing to buy and potentially not use in case I decide I hate it. =p haha

Every once in a while I see a guy that can pull off the boots/shorts combo and look hotter than hell. But most times, they think they look hot and they just look ... well not so hot. But l do love boots on a man in uniform (think police, fire, military), etc.

For me ... I love boots ... both pairs in the pictures above
To you it's "a look", to me it's way of keeping speargrass out of my socks.

I know they're not as sexy as some of my thigh highs and my other fetishy ones, but I love 'em! (they're probably one of the only "normal"-ish pairs I own)

I have some super cute ones and some fetishy ones and all boots in between. I love boots.

Which means I am an experienced bootblack.

I recommend starting out with Saddle Soap to clean your boots (it works great on purses and anything leather).

The the Kiwi polish in a matching color, though they do have colorless polish, which does not work as well covering scuff marks.

You need two brushes, the small round one to dab into the polish tub and apply to the boots, and the larger one for shining. You can buy shining clothes as well, which do a great job on heels and toes that you want extra spiffy.

For winter, I always follow up my work with Kiwi Protect-all, which is a water and stain repellent.

And....is there another brand than Kiwi? It's all I seem to have in my bootblack kit (other than the Saddle Soap, which is it's own brand).

Most of my boots are for indoor use (*wink*) but I do wear them outside every once in a while. *lol*

Thank you, but I need to correct myself: I have a Kiwi brand of Saddle Soap. So it is not it's own brand (sorry, I didn't go look).

I also have a suede and nubuck protector (spray) and a nubuck cleaning brush. You can even buy nubuck spray that will not polish but "refurbish" your nubuck.

All my suggestions on leather cleaning are not just for boots. Shoes, purses, leather vests, etc. can all benefit. I use saddle soap on my leather floggers to keep them supple, and the protector to resist moisture and stains.

The suede and nubuck protector also works well for suede floggers, I have found.

Thanks Chatte. :) the only saddle soap I'd seen was by Kiwi, so thanks for the clarification.
I don't personally have a ton of leather stuff for obvious reasons but I don't have a problem taking care of someone else's stuff.
After I get some experience with throw-away stuff, I'll probably mostly do it for me friend. :p

Oh it's easy, just follow directions and make sure you let the item dry thoroughly before going to the next step.

So that's clean, let dry.

Polish, let dry.

Spray with protectant, and let dry 24 hours.

If you are working on a large shoe or boot, put your left hand inside while your right hand works on it. This will let you manipulate the item as you wish.

BTW: I just looked though my kit, and all brands are Kiwi except for some Coach Leather Moisturizer that I use only for my Coach bags.

Well, it's been a while, but I think it was like this:

Polish
Big boot brush
Round boot brush
Tooth brush
Rag for applying (can also use round brush)
Rag for polishing (can also use big brush)
Toothbrush for cleaning groves

I have also heard that mink oil is really good for keeping up leather. It doesn't leave a residue like polish but it keeps the leather soft and free of cracks.
