I have some super cute ones and some fetishy ones and all boots in between. I love boots. Which means I am an experienced bootblack. I recommend starting out with Saddle Soap to clean your boots (it works great on purses and anything leather). The the Kiwi polish in a matching color, though they do have colorless polish, which does not work as well covering scuff marks. You need two brushes, the small round one to dab into the polish tub and apply to the boots, and the larger one for shining. You can buy shining clothes as well, which do a great job on heels and toes that you want extra spiffy. For winter, I always follow up my work with Kiwi Protect-all, which is a water and stain repellent. And....is there another brand than Kiwi? It's all I seem to have in my bootblack kit (other than the Saddle Soap, which is it's own brand).
