They were in China for years, owned Korea, etc. It appears they had thought it out further then the Germans had. The attacks in December 1941 on both the British, French, Dutch and the US which chased all the above out of East Asia where pretty well played out. They might have waited longer, or chose to take down one at a time, but that was what they were wanting to do.
