the police are doing their job. their job is to protect the property rights of the establishment. the more established you are and the more property you have, the more the police protect you. when everything is copacetic, the cops have time for other things--enforcing traffic laws, busting poor kids on pot charges so we can put them in the prison system and turn them into real criminals, watching each others' asses--but when a bunch of troublemakers start trying to cause disruptions that threaten property and capital that's when cops spring into action.

i have been punched, kicked, and clubbed myself (never gassed nor zapped) and i have tremendous sympathy and respect for everyone we have seen, and who we will see as the demonstrations continue, being brutalized by cops. when these images go viral, it is one of the best things that can happen for the movement. when americans see other americans who look just like their neighbors and their kids getting their asses kicked by cops for protesting against a corrupt system, it's one of the most effective rhetorical tools imaginable. thank god these people have the guts to get out there and do this.

oh, and when people talk shit about them (in real life or on the internet) and make jokes about 20 year old women getting tear gassed or students getting stomped, that's a pretty good rhetorical tool too. keep those people steady talking shit. the more crass and insensitive things they say, the grosser and more disconnected "their side" (note: the 1% don't actually give two shits about them) is shown to be.

bottom line: at the end of the day this is what cops do. this is what cops are for. it's ugly but the more people who realize this elementary fact the more likely it becomes that some kind of progress can be made.

At least you get the fact that in a capitalist society the only legitimate role of the government is to protect property rights.

Bottom line: OWS is anti-capitalist. So give those iPads and iPhones back to mommy and daddy, and start a commune, and see how you like living without the benefits of capitalism.

Police in this country need to be reined in, in a big way, they have proceeded down the para-military gestapo path for long enough.

So conservative business owners, give back that (corporate) welfare you so richly complain about and see how you like living in the world you demand the poor live in.

Oh, btw, did you ever collect unemployment?

Where are the reports of cities ablaze and the lootings?

I understand you are emotionally attached to the end of the world scenarios, but they just aint happening anywhere.

Maybe that's why he's so upset about teh Kenyan winning that election three years back? If Sorebutt and Barbie had won it, there'd probably have been a nuclear exchange with China by now...

Give it some time. We are barely at the act 1 of a 10-12 act play.

I thought teh Kenyan was a one term president, though? We're halfway through act 9 if it's a twelve act play, and the sky hasn't shown any sign of falling just yet...

Its actually act II, we just had a 40 year intermission. And it will probably be another 40 before Act III once the curtain comes down on this one.

The police are both the government and the people. This seems to be an example some of the people believing they are above other people.

Its sad... and dangerous... that so many want to turn this into a joke.

The police are an extension of the executive branch, and represent the government. I agree this is no joke, when it is obvious that if no one was watching the police would be more brutal about things, and not even care about it. they would justify it with some of the same things that a few posters on here have used to justify it.

Well if things are still going on closer to Christmas, when we have our annual blanket give away at the park, will see if we can get a few extra ones for any Occupy members that need them. Wonder if me and my girl will get beat for passing out blankets to the homeless.

the police date way back to early england.  They were hired by the king to keep "the kings peace."  That is to say "policy" enforcement of the city etc that is NOT the same as laws.  At best PRIVATE corporate by-law.

The state constitution, at least Wisconsin, states that any officer has a duty to protect the "Sovereignty" of the State.  NOT THE PEOPLE!

Sovereignty is the kingship or power thereof.

Police if you read the fine print in every state that I have seen so far are NOT part of government but PRIVATE "associations", "corporations" that have been given authority to act for the corporation, (municipality)

THAT you gave jurisdiction over you when you signed paperwork that you were born IN the state of and you reside IN the state of and your property is IN the state, IN the county, IN the city.

If you are IN my yard and crapping on MY lawn which is IN my yard or a "tenant" with-IN the boundaries of my yard then I have jurisdiction OVER your actions.  Like lets make a deal 101.

That said police are NOT government!

and the beat goes on.

I actually say remove the restraints from the police so people can see how they really want to handle it. Once that is done, the OWS movement will get tons more people to support them.
