Well the thing is, a lot of theologists debate on this one but the premarital sex thing is mainly based on these ideas ... 1.) When a woman had sex for the first time, that man became her husband. Whether she'd made the vow or not, he was her husband. This included if she was a virgin and got raped. Her lack of hymen spoiled her for any other man. 2.) Multiple sex partners means greater risk of STDs ... So, a lot of people believe that like many of God's rules for His children, no premarital sex is a way of protecting us from catching cooties. Besides that, they didnt really have reliable birth control back then so what happened to the child if an unmarried woman got pregnant? It was just better for everyone involved if she was safely married and a man was responsible for her and her child. 3.) The Hebrew marriage ceremony actually involved a covenant of blood ... Virgin blood ... I'm not clear on the all the details but basically the sheets are kept with the blood stains on them so that if at any point in the future there is any dispute over the marriage or the promise or anything at all, those sheets can be whipped out and everyone can be reminded of the blood covenant. Now with that said, yes poly was accepted back then. Basically a man could have as many wives as he could support. More wives meant more sons ... More sons meant more wealth. The thing is, the first wife gets to choose any of the other wives. Its not like he could just run out and pick any woman he wanted. I'm not Catholic and I'm sure the Catholic reason behind all of it is different but thats how it was explained to me ...
